American Education: How smart are we?

Have you ever wondered what rank the U.S gets in education compared to other countries? Well, being one of the top countries in the world with our economy, military, and trade, we end up ranking a measly overall score of 14. Pearson PLC, a popular learning company, calculated this by testing math, reading, and science in 15 year old students. Pearson developed a collection of data called the Learning Curve that incorporates many other factors to use as comparison, for example the amount of money that goes into our education from the government. The public expenditure per pupil, which is the amount the government spends on primary education, divided by the total number of pupils in primary education, is expressed in a percentage per capita GDP. Pearson’s study expressed how China is at a whopping 90%, while America is 22%; the American GDP is about 52,000$ while China is 9,300$. America has more money but spends less on education. Tuition fees are fully subsidised for students from Sweden, the EU/EEA area, and Switzerland. Students from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland pay tuition fees but scholarship programmes that cover tuition and living costs are available for a number of non-EU countries. (Swedish Institute).
Post-secondary education is just as important as primary, primary lays the foundation, while secondary gives you the opportunity to give yourself stability in the world. It’s now almost a key to survival. American students are lucky enough to get loans through financial aid, but walking out with a Bachelor’s Degree 100,000$ in debt is not really a good start. I talked to many students on the campus of FIU that say the majority of their school is paid through with financial aid, which consists of loans that they will have to pay back later. These students depend on it.
This can cause some people to become deterred by the thought of even going on to college because who will pay for

“The international comparisons started in the 1960’s, with the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), in areas of mathematics, involving 133,000 elementary and secondary students and 5,450 schools in twelve technologically advanced countries… Student characteristics highly correlated with achievement, and the child’s social class accounted for the greatest share of variation in learning” (Ornstein, 2010, p. 425). The economics of schooling shares this insight, “Had America been able to close the gap in science and math achievement between 1983 and 1998 and raised its performance to the level of such nations as Canada, Finland, and South Korea, the U.S. Gross Domestic Product in 1998 would have been approximately $2 trillion higher. If its achievement gap had been closed between black and Hispanic students and white and Asian students by 1998 the Gross Domestic Product in 2008 would have been about $400 to $500 Billion higher” (Ornstein, 2010, p. 426). Are we all in agreement with the academic shift?…

This is something students should experience because it is a one in a lifetime experience. College education is an important experience people should encounter at some point in their lives, but as the increase of its cost is going up, it is getting unreasonable for people to pay. Therefore the cost of higher education should be reduced to a more reasonable cost.…

Being a Spokane Indian boy living with his family on the Spokane Indian Reservation in eastern Washington state attending the schools in the reservation school system, a high education wasn’t only uncommon but it was looked down upon. As Indian children, we were expected to fail. We were expected to never reach the level of education that everyone else would reach.…
