When one person drops a piece of garbage on the sidewalk and another person (without hesitation) picks it up, this is an simply yet helpful visual of education affects on society at it’s core. We are all taught certain rules to live by, such as, “Please”, “Don’t stare”, “Look both ways before crossing” and in the specific example mentioned above “Don’t litter.” These are all rules that were taught to us through our parents, teachers, close friends, etc to educate us on how to be a responsible and confident members of society. Without these educational guidelines that keeps society both respectable and operational, mankind would be polluted with discourteous people. People are directed to their own independent beliefs and morals based on their individual experiences and upbringings. For example, my mother was born and raised in Mexico and I was born and raised in the U.S; we have similar yet dissimilar ethics. Specifically this one instant, I remember crying when I was told that I could not attend one of my friend’s sleepover. This was because sleepovers were not in my mother’s culture. In fact sleepovers were forbidden unless you were family members. At the time, her reasonings did not make any sense to me whatsoever, however now, I have grown up and have gathered my own morals and can fully admit that education teaches you all the many values and virtues of life. These beliefs teach us how to lead our lives and transforms us into mature individuals capable of planning for our future. According to Martin Luther King Jr., “Education must enable a man to become more efficient, to achieve with increasing facility the ligitimate goals of his life.” This concept is true because education enables us to use our unique characteristics to set goals which mold us into the people we wish to
