Churches have mobilized and started visiting prisons to help them meet the needs of the prisoners. In Texas, there is a group called Prison Fellowship spearheaded an InnerChange Freedom Initiative several years ago to help decrease the recidivism rate. The program works with the Texas Department of Corrections with prisoners, two years before and one year after they are released. The program helps over a hundred men that are housed together in a holistic program that is faith-based. Not only is this a religious program but, it also includes life skills, educational and occupational training, assistance with gaining employment, substance abuse training and getting entrenched in the community church. Each inmate that participates will have their mentor who will help them in prison and when they are released. Hall, L. (2015).
Education being used as a tool to reduce recidivism may be able to provide numerous benefits for the United States. Learning begins with criminal getting a correctional education, this, in turn, is shared with his family, society and the corrections facility. The benefits incurred by the reduction is less money spent on incarcerating the offender, lessened strain on families, and there is a boost in the economy for society. Educating the inmate will help them to gain employment after they are released, helping to reduce the recidivism
