Education In Ghana Vs America

There is this common perception that education is what makes people successful. It is understood by most persons that you go through school, obtain your degrees, then obtain a sophisticated job that you were trained in school for. However, in my point of view education is not necessarily what gets you that job that you obtain. Education is seen as a guide for people to know where to go in life. I feel like coming from two different countries, which have different educational systems gave me two different views about education. Ghana is not as developed as America and so their educational system is not as developed in some places, especially in the villages. I had the opportunity to visit one of the public schools and It allowed me to see the major difference between having an educational experience in Ghana and one in America. The recourses were one of the major issues that students were facing in their schools. There was lack of story books, while back in America it is in abundance, there are even public libraries available in each district. They sat on wooden made desk that they had to share with two or three more people at the same time, making it uncomfortable. Also, school supplies were another problem that intervened with their studies, due to the fact that they did not have all these supplies they barely took any notes. When I was their age, in America I would always take notes in school, so when I get home my dad and I would revise over them. Observing the students not taking notes, yet excelling in their classes taught me the lesson that determination and focus is what I truly needed in my educational life. They were able to grasp the concept, understand it and use the information to excel in their classes. As Baldwin mentions in “A Talk to Teachers” (1963) “The purpose of education, finally, is to create in a person the ability to look at the world for himself”. The students just observing shows that they are grasping the concept and would later on perceive it in their own way. The kids taking down notes of what the teacher is saying would not help them …show more content…
I believe most of the things we learn in school are just to give a further understanding. However, it is not everything we will use, we would just need to know what we have to do and what not to do. But, having the educational background is what gives a much clearer understanding; it teaches you how to analyze things before taking decisions. This what happened on my visit to the public school, seeing all I have compared to those of the children taught me to be more focused in my classes, because I will need the lesson I picked up to guide me through life. However, what I leant will not be the thing to help me attain that career I a striving
