Reflective Writing Assignment 3

Section A: Introduction
Over the past years, I have looked for ways to help students achieve literacy goals in order for them to succeed in second grade and on. Mertler (2014) helped me guide my action research by collecting the information using the guide questions he provided. My dilemma since I started working as a teacher over seven years was helping struggling readers and writers master their syllables. According to the state standards, students are expected to know the letters and its sound once reach first grade. This expectation is not completely accurate, at least in my years of teaching. As a dual immersion teacher in the Spanish language, I see this dilemma through the years and have wondered how I can help these learners achieve the kindergarten skill and be on a first grade level, especially the English native speakers. Lennox (2014), point out that Poetry and rhymes strengthen children’s oral and written language abilities and enhance knowledge, understandings and skills. For my action research, I am looking for ways to provide opportunities to develop clear articulation, phonological awareness and alphabet knowledge and Lennox (2014) provides the contribution for me to develop this method for my learners’ success. She gives practical strategies to support learning by the rhythm and patterns. Part of the strategy is to involve movement or body to encourage the learners to be attentive of the precise sound. A great correlation between my action research and what Lennox (2014) explains is that the use of vocabulary, discourse skills and background knowledge set the stage for learning to read and knowing how words go together to form phrases and sentences – is also learned through exposure to interesting language and interaction with
