Personal Statement: Pursuing A Career In Elementary Education

1 I come from a long line of educators and administrators on both sides of my family. Various relatives of mine have taught me to understand and appreciate the importance of education. This being the case, they have inspired my decision to be a teacher, preferably an elementary school teacher. Last year, I sat in on my aunt’s third grade class at Washington Irving, an elementary school in my district that I attended for three years. After visiting the classroom a handful of times, I absolutely fell in love. I, then, found my passion and decided I wanted to be an elementary school teacher. 6 Finding the perfect school to attend for your career choice is the first of many important things you must do before being ready to start your career. In Oklahoma, plenty of colleges offer elementary school teaching programs. I have been contemplating for quite some time now, and because the options are so numerous, I want to choose my place of education based on my previous hopes and dreams of attending a particular college. The college I have decided on is the University of Central Oklahoma (careers.org). 5 In order to …show more content…

Even though the pay isn’t excellent and the amounts of stress can sometimes be overwhelming, I could not be happier to have found what my passion is and to do something with my life that it involves. 11 Helping students achieve success and grow in their everyday lives is one of the most, if not the most, wonderful things with which someone like myself could be blessed. The thought of knowing you are doing a good deed by leading the children you teach into a prosperous life full of knowledge is a feeling that’s rewarding and

    Edwin And Phyllis Summary

There are many articles that I have read over the last few weeks, but two in particular really challenged my thinking and philosophy in regards to education. In the article, “Edwin & Phyllis,” Lynn Fendler engages her readers with a meaningful dialogue between an experienced teacher and a prospective educator, debunking some of the more traditional responses that young, perspective teachers might give for wanting to become educators. The truth is that teaching can be anything but glamorous and oftentimes straddles the fine line between causing more harm then the good that it seeks to accomplish in the life of a child. Prospective teachers must not only think about what motivates them in wanting to become educators, but what type of teachers…

Teaching has become a way of living. Teaching is exhausting, but at the end I know that I have the power to make a positive impression in the minds of the children I teach. I know that after ten years teaching I have touched many of my students’ lives. They will remember me as the teacher who believed that kids have voices worth listening to, and the person who hoped to be an unforgettable teacher who not only had the job of teaching children valuable information but also being a strong role model for children to look up to.…

I have seen many people in my family spend hours of their lives preparing lessons, studying, grading, and working to make their classrooms better places for students to be. As Mrs. Boytor noted in my interview, “teaching is one of the most exhausting yet rewarding careers” a person could pursue. Hard work is not something that scares me. What is exciting is that with each new year, “new people… [and] new perspectives” will come into my life (Wolpert-Gawron). I look forward to many challenges, successes, and even failures that will teach me to look at life in a fresh and energized…

“So, Ellen, what are your plans for after graduation?” a nosy, albeit well meaning, great-aunt asks. I stare into her intent, keen expression as it bores into me. She is leant forward, on the edge of the armchair, facing me, while maintaining her friendly demeanor in tone, her expression remains unreadable. Her sudden undivided attention shines a bright spotlight on me and I know she is hanging on to every breath I take, before I even speak.…

Almost a decade ago, I decided I wanted to pursue a degree in education. At age 10, I shadowed my aunt at the elementary school where she teaches. I woke up early, put on dress clothes and my fuchsia pea coat to impress the students. My aunt and I greeted the students as they entered the classroom with our arms behind our back and smiles on our faces. My aunt introduced me to her class of third graders.…

Playing Make Believe It is three thirty on a monday afternoon as I board my yellow bus to go home after a day of school at Herbert Hoover Elementary. I walked through my front door, threw my blue butterfly backpack onto the hook, and ran directly up to my room. At the time, it could be more accurately referred to as my classroom. Inside yellow and blue painted walls with a chalkboard and cliche classroom posters, I taught my class of invisible students the exact same lesson Mrs. Molle taught that day in my first grade class.…

As a matter of fact, my family tree is filled with educators; teaching may even be a genetic inclination. Moreover, I thoroughly enjoyed instructing both kids and adults in the limited capacities I have, such as coaching athletics and tutoring. The confluence of my experiences abroad and personal proclivity toward teaching has bolstered my resolve to become a teacher but also made me understand that eschewing my own education was hampering my own development. Desire to Teach I made the decision to become a teacher my junior year in high school. As a part of my high school’s service learning program, we were required to work at a community agency for eight weeks. I did my service work at Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Louisville. I loved working with the students there, and because I loved it so much I decided to pursue a career in teaching because I wanted a job that I would love to go to every day. As an extension of the service- learning program, I also worked with Visually Impaired Preschool Services and Kentucky School for Blind.…

I plan to go just for my Bachelors Degree so hopefully it will take me around four years to complete college and begin being a teacher, it may take longer due to different things that can come up during the school year or if I am having issues with getting all of the things I need to graduate but hopefully it will only be the four years I am shooting for. For UCO the requirements for an undergraduate coming from just graduating high school are a 20 composite score on the ACT, a combined score from math and reading of 940 on the SAT or a non weighted grade point average (GPA) of 2.7 and you must be in the upper half of your class ranking. When I finish my basics to be able to move on I have to maintain a C or higher in my supportive coursework and pass the Oklahoma General Education Test (OGET) as well (“University of Central…
