The definition of early life as a social determinant of health given by Rumbold and Dickson-Swift is “A good start in life means supporting mothers and young children.” (Rumbold & Dickson-Swift, 2012, p. 180). Early life describes the period from prenatal development to eight years of age, and is a time of remarkable brain growth and development, this period establishes the foundations for subsequent development and learning (Siddiqi, Irwin, & Hertzman, 2007).

This was achieved through education, providing relevant information about health and the social services available, providing health care on site at the caravan park, and working to improve the communication and decision making skills of the residents.
The ten social determinants of health discussed by Rumbold & Dickson-Swift (2012) were affecting or had impacted on some, if not all of the residents of the Coach Stop Caravan Park. By creating a permanent and visible presence, the Coach Stop Caravan Park Project helped to reduce the social exclusion being encountered. The project worked to bring vital health services, such as nurses with accreditation in drug dependence and immunisation, and a volunteer general practitioner to the residents.
Government funding was obtained to establish programs to improve the literacy levels of the residents. This improvement means better employment opportunities, this also helps to reduce social exclusion and provides opportunities for the residents to become more involved and included in the larger
