A person’s personality type will have a significant impact on how they accomplish tasks and interact with other people. These traits become very important as it relates to how an individual will function in the workplace. While some personality traits are very effective in an isolated, or small group setting, they can create issues when part of a larger workforce, or engaging others over a long length of time. Understanding different personality, types, and how to effectively engage them, will help reduce the risk of conflict in the workplace, and ultimately help a people accomplish the tasks set before them in an effective manner. The personality description didn’t indicate that I’m a strong extrovert. In fact, it only ranked me as an extrovert by 3% over introvert. While being classified as an extrovert did surprise me a little, I’m not uncomfortable with the designation since I was a close match with introvert. I think a big reason why it label me as an extrovert is because, over the last decade, I have held positions that required me to do a fair amount of public speaking. Sometimes the group may only be a few dozen, but at times, the crowd would be over 400. While I don’t enjoy public speaking, this experience certainly has made me much more comfortable with it. In general, I do really enjoy being around people and interacting with them. However, I seldom enjoy being the center of attention. I love working on my truck, or building things. When it comes to working with people, I also like trying to figure out what makes them tick. I have had different jobs over the years that focused more on one type than the other. For example, I spent about 4 years working as a land surveyor when I got out of high school. This job definitely involved more of a sensory approach to work because I was always working with measurements, concrete calculation and numbers, and had to be very precise when completing a project. This work also required me to complete jobs with a certain type of process or routine. My current job also requires a sensory approach at times. I am supposed to help a student work through problems, or simply degree planning, in a very methodical way. I also have to approach my daily workload in a way that often prioritizes raw numbers and quantity of work over creativity or quality of work. When I had a job in ministry, my approach to working with people often took more of an intuitive approach. While I can certainly see the benefit of being balanced in both of these areas, I can also see that it could negative because I likely don’t excel at either one.
