Reflective Essay: How Has Improved In My Writing

Improved Essays
Throughout the semester, I was required to write essays for EN 101. In previous years, I wrote mostly the same style of essays, however, this semester I was required to write many different styles of essays. Thus, I was forced to leave my comfort zone for writing and to challenge myself, which in turn helped to improve my writing. My essays that I have wrote for EN 101 demonstrate that I have improved in supporting my thesis, keeping the paper organized, and creating better conclusions. Although my writing has improved, I still need to work to create stronger transitions between paragraphs and new thoughts within my papers. When this semester first started, I struggled to support my thesis throughout the entirety of my essay. My first paper, the narrative essay, is a great example of how I struggled. The topic of this paper was a book that was significant to me. I had a thesis for this paper which stated three different ways the book had impacted me, however I found it challenging to expand upon these three topics within my paper. In one paragraph I discussed how the book taught me life lessons, but I could not provide a good example, so I simply quoted a line from the …show more content…
Most times I would simply take one sentence from each paragraph in my essay, and form one conclusion paragraph that was very repetitive, and often oddly worded. The conclusion to my narrative essay is a perfect example. Each sentence in the paragraph can be found in another paragraph throughout the essay. While I am still working to improve my abilities to write a conclusion paragraph, I believe that I have started to show signs of improvement over the course of this semester. In more recent essays, I have worked hard to summarize the essay without simply rewriting a five sentence version of the essay. I have also worked to make sure that my conclusion paragraphs are not overly

During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

If I was writing a paper that required a specific number of paragraphs or pages I would typically plan my paper using the four square method. If I was writing an important paper I would write a rough draft, then as I was typing it I would revise it and fix any mistakes I found. One thing that remained consistent in my writing process, no matter the type of paper, is after I wrote the paper I would try to find more grade level appropriate words instead of the simple words I originally used. While writing essays for this class I came to find it is better to combine my writing processes to write the best possible essay I could. I found the best steps for me to take in writing my paper are to write my ideas down in some form.…

I would start with the introduction and just move along my papers with no real structure involved. Since taking this class, I have learned that this is an accepted method for writing a paper, but it is not the only one. I have started mapping out my papers more, but they are still not quite formal outlines. I simply write my thesis, and leave bullet points of my main ideas. This invention strategy has helped me several times when I felt that I was stuck on a prompt, as well as organizing my paper more concisely.…

My first essay, Response Essay, was the lowest grade out of the all the essays I have done in this course. First of all, this was my first essay in this class, but also I have always written my essays like that in high school. After getting feedback, I was aware of what parts of my writing need improvement. The new abilities I will take away from this course are how to correctly write sentences, as well as how to improve the development of my essay. Alternatively, some of the things I still need work on are sentence structure, transitions, and making sure my conclusions conclude the whole essay, not by summarizing the main points, but rather stating the main idea of what the essay is all about.…

I still need to further my progress on grammar and organizational skills to make my writing flow better and punctuation. Just about all the papers that were assigned to me this semester had almost the same comments which were fixing the little things like punctuation. However, the writing that I must find satisfying are narrative essays because I think that is what I am best at, being one with a pen in paper is what I would say being an artist is all about. Before I would have never said my essays were art but now I truly believe that they are not because I wrote them and they got a good score but because I told my story and did not have to sugar code it for anyone, I expressed myself and put myself for everyone to see. It wasn 't because I wanted to know what they thought of my work but more because I wanted me to think of my work not just confined to myself by out there for everyone to know it 's okay to express yourself.…

Although my thesis and topic sentences changed a bit when it actually came to writing my essay, writing them before hand created a rough outline that kept me on track with my rhetorical analysis. This strategy I came to learn would help me make sure that I was directing my essay in the right direction of the prompt and keeping my body paragraphs in an organized manner. It was also important for me to be keeping the rhetorical triangle in mind as I wrote my thesis and topic sentences, which was something new that I had not necessarily payed much attention to before learning about the rhetorical triangle. Because of the prewriting step, my essay on Henry and Little was prepared in an organized fashion that ensured my essay to be successful in means of its…
