Narrative Essay On Alcoholism

I would like to think that the day after my mom’s boyfriend found me passed out in an alley after a night of binge drinking Jack Daniels was when I decided to cut back. But it wasn’t. It also wasn’t the morning after I engulfed enough tequila to inebriate a baby elephant and woke up in the backseat of my Jeep in a parking garage. It was morning, but early enough that the sky was still pitch black. I had no recollection if I was helped by someone or if I managed to stumble my way back solo. The day I looked into the toothpaste stained mirror of my small one bedroom apartment bathroom and saw I was developing a small beer belly was when I decided it was time to cut back. Pretty superficial right? I only then started to become concerned with my drinking after my physical appearance was becoming effected. …show more content…
It’s because I’m not. These days I average about 1-2 full drinks per month, if that. I’m not here to preach sobriety or tell a few terrible stories to scare you into reevaluating your life. I just want to share what I have discovered once I decided to consume alcohol in moderation. I want to share how I was treated and how uncomfortable people made me feel that I was making a decision to improve my health. But I also want to share the amazing health benefits and positivity that I have gained because of this decision. Was I on the verge of obesity? Not even close, my vegan diet is pretty rigorous so my overall health wasn’t really a concern. I wasn’t chasing perfection I just wanted to look strong and healthy. If you read any weight loss magazine, blog, or celebrity endorsed eating program they all exhort the same mantra. Cut out the alcohol. So that’s exactly what I did. Not only did I

I was honestly more or less just tasting it, so I would have a few sips and then hand it off to someone else. In fact, I’m certain that on most of the occasions that I did consume alcohol it wasn’t even enough to consider a full drink, and any time I did drink I was in my own house. So, there was no risk of me doing something reckless. Also my short and sporadic experiences with alcohol led me to realize that I actually don’t like the taste of most alcoholic drinks. I think one of changes that I was experiencing was in my limbic system, which is important for making sense of social information (Steinberg, 2014, p.71).…

Drinking, and particularly underage drinking is a possibility that seems to flood your consciousness when you step onto a college campus like the University of Georgia. It’s pervasive, and everyone who’s anyone seems to be doing it. Of course there are conscientious objectors, medical abstainers, and those who decide to just wait until they’re 21, but at least in my experience it seems that almost everyone falls into the camp that imbibes. One of the first things I did in college was decide I couldn’t beat them so I might as well join them.…

Addiction support meetings have multiple benefits beyond helping a person move toward a healthier, more stable and productive life without the misuse of substances. Historically speaking, in the case of Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, the idea that one alcoholic speaking with another is enough of a good start for progress toward recovery. As a matter of fact, that is how it is described in AA literature (Big Book, 2001). Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship founded in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith in Akron, Ohio. Its primary purpose is to help alcoholics stay sober and help other alcoholics achieve sobriety.…

Although, I have experienced social occasions where consuming alcohol made interacting with friends and strangers-alike immensely easy, it didn’t significantly change behaviors. A certain barrier of self-monitoring is broken down and one is able to speak without filters and care little about what other people think of them. Albeit, as the conclusion and nuanced summary state, utilizing alcohol in moderation brings the most positive…

I started to look down on the people who drank just to get drink. For many months straight, I believed that I was better than them until a older gentleman came into the pub to get a drink and ended up sparking a conversation. We talked mostly about how he drank to forget all of the bad that has happened in his life. I then started thinking about how I was stereotyping the customers and I didn’t know what any of them have gone through in…
