The third Japanese water issue is that the price for tap water has risen up in recent years. The main cause is the decline of population in Japan. The infrastructures in Japan that delivers drinking water to homes and processes the drinking water are superannuated in many places. However, local water supply agents do not have enough money to maintain and repair these water facilities and water treatment facilities because revenues have been dropping in recent years due to loss of water users. According to the weekly magazine Shukan Josei, the magazine features in reports that the costs of reservoir maintenance and repair for Tokyo’s water supply are highest in Japan. However, the water fees are lowest among in areas and regions in Japan because there are a lot of water users and about 10,000 per kilometer of pipe. However, fees can cover only 30 percent of the maintenance expenses. Therefore, the government had to come up with a solution to cover the rest of maintenance expenses. One of the solutions to the water fee problem is conservation. Although Japan has much amount of fresh water, the Japan Water Works Association encourages users to save water as much as they can. This solution would not only ease the stress on the system, but also reduce their water bills because we do not need much efforts to purify chemicals and other treatments. The average water uses for a person is 250 liters per day in Japan. The main reason why people use a large amount of water is that they usually take baths every day. Therefore, changing toilet valves and switching to showers would help save water.
