Great Gatsby Questions

Is it right for others to question your dreams? To me the answer is no, however, I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer to this question because everyone has a different point of view of almost everything. The book The Great Gatsby, which was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a American style novel describing a millionaire also faces many judgments from others, characters in this book clearly performed how the society is, hates, love, jealousy, having doubts, and somehow can reflect today’s society either. It’s so hard not to judge other people nowadays, and people consider gossip as an interesting event while they’re having high tea or eating lunch. Everyone has their own goals to achieve, which might seem ridiculous to other people, …show more content…
When reading The Great Gatsby, I find that the phenomenon that judging others’ business and dreams also exists. Gatsby is a mysterious millionaire character in the first several chapters. That nobody knows who Gatsby really is even makes him more mysterious. His wealth and business become something that people love to guess and gossip. Nick, the only friend of Gatsby in the end, questions things that said out from Gatsby’s mouth. Whatever Gatsby says, Nick has a question mark on his head. But the situation is different here because it’s true that Gatsby doesn’t say all true. When Nick shows his doubts and confusion, all Gatsby do is changing his performance because he wants to be more persuasive. This is different from the situation when people say all truth and talk about dreams, they want to be understood and appreciated but not questioned. For example, I’m a Drama major student. I feel really aukward when I see people’s faces after knowing my major is Drama. Even they don’t say so, I can tell they’re surprised and qustioning my major. They all ask that what’s my plan after guaduating, and they say it like I can nver find a job because entertainment circle is so hard to get in. People always think that entertainment circle has a certain competition, but I say that which job dosen’t have a competition? If there are people, the place has competition. So sometimes I wish others don’t judge my dream and major so …show more content…
Growing up I have always wanted to become an actress, I was amazed by their look and admire their glory, the way how they can perform and transform into another person. However, my family wanted me to go for a business major, but join the entertainment society; they believe a business major is a better fit in today’s society. However I didn’t listen to their suggestions and kept reaching for my goal. I was lucky that my family is able to support my living and my needs. A year ago I have no idea of what I’m going to become or do when I graduate, but going to act, and becoming an actress is not as easy as I thought. I have no working experience and really confused about my future. After me and my boyfriend got to know each other and I told him about my dream and is confused with my future. He rejected my goal and told me that I won’t last a day in the Chinese entertainment system, which to become successful I will have to pay the price that I will regret for the rest of my life, I knew he’s right but I don’t have any plan and it was my dream growing up. I was really sad and hopeless. In this case, question other people’s dreams can be a dream killer. Dreams are beautiful but fragile, that it’s hard to establish, but easy to destroy.
Judging other people’s dreams can be rude and a dream killer. Advise people with your fact and knowledge, but never judge. You never know what you have harmed with your judgment; sometimes it’s more than just

Even though my mother was never really fond of the idea of me packing up and going to college, she supported me when I told her I wanted to pursue a higher education in the medical field to reach the career I had been dreaming of. She wanted to give me, “chances that she never had” and wanted me to allow myself to, “get all the education” that I could (344). She knew I watched her struggle for years trying to stay above the water with the little income she had. Certainly, his action can prove exasperating, but that should not elicit such strong emotions towards him. I theorize that it is because readers subconsciously project themselves on Arthur's character. In today's society, fear of rejection is a strong sensation. Nobody wishes to be the singled-out figure left to be shamed. It stems from lack of hope of being forgiven, leading people to lie and cheat in order to cover up past mistakes to avoid the need for forgiveness.…

    Tragic Destiny In Oedipus

    • 1201 Words
    • 5 Pages

It is very ironic that Oedipus wanted to know the truth but did not see the truth in any advice he was offered for his own good; for example when Teiresias told him indirectly who the murderer was and that it would be best for Oedipus to stop questioning and leave this topic alone, but Oedipus did not listen. When Jocasta realized that the prophecy of her son had indeed been carried out, she tries to save him but Oedipus insensibly called her prideful and dismissed her warnings. Also another example is when Oedipus completely disregards Teiresias advice that “[his] enemy is [him]-self” (Sophocles 36), and takes pride in the fact that he “stopped the riddler 's mouth, guessing the truth...” (Sophocles 37). Oedipus ' pride was boosted when he became the king, and he is taking advantage of his position by doing what he wishes, thinking what he wants to think and not listening to anyone else. His ignorance is slowly breaking away the protective layer of the truth, leading him to neglect the helping hand of the few who want to protect him.…

Nick first meets Gatsby at one of his extravagant parties unknowingly conversing with him. One of Nick 's initial reactions regarding the character of Mr. Gatsby was that he was “ an elegant young roughneck” (Fitzgerald 48). Nick looked past Gatsby 's charm and presumed him as an arrogant man. Nick 's presumption of Mr. Gatsby soon changed; he was suddenly astonished of Jay Gatsby 's life story. In the article “New essays on The Great Gatsby” The author, Matthew Bruccoli, states: “The narrator, Nick Carraway, senses that he is too quick to condemn [Gatsby]... he goes on to make an exception for Gatsby, allying Gatsby to an older, more humane America---an ironic identification” (42).…

While some jobs do have them, not all of them do. This is a problem for when students don’t know what they want to do for a career and become lost, or they thought they knew and it turned out that they didn’t like their career choice in general and then become lost and dissatisfied. For example, perhaps I want to become an actor but there’s no way for me to know if I’ll enjoy it or not. So I prepare to go into the acting business and things appear to be working, but halfway through I lose interest and want a career change. I can’t do anything because it takes years to prepare for a new career.…
