The first step I would take to prevent prejudice would be by helping to instill racial sensitivity and acceptance in the younger generation. It is imperative that we take the step to discuss what race is with children. Children will not stay “color-blind” forever and, thus, we must facilitate the transition to “color-aware” to avoid promotion of racial biases. In primary education, I would warrant that there is better communication between the teachers and students about race and culture. I would approach this change by using books, which have always been used as a way to expose children to important lessons. A diverse library that explores cultural issues will empower children to understand their racial identity and those of others. It is a difficult feat to not just tolerate others’ differences but also show how the world is better when diversity is allowed to enrich your life. I would create more community events to allow more members to expose themselves to different cultures and learn and grow. I would elevate the World’s Fair that I helped create to allow more people in my community to immerse themselves in a multitude of different cultures. In schools, I would demand for more teachers to be hired to teach different languages that are only offered online. Moreover, I would create positive change in my community by providing more opportunities to exchange ideas and travel to experience better cultural diffusion in our world today.
