The Importance Of Diversity In Education

This week the readings were covering how to work with students that are culturally diverse from the teacher. I think the perspective that white bread comes from is one that everyone needs to prepare himself or herself for. It is a difficult idea, how to put yourself in your kids shoes. What I see will not be what my students see, so how do I go around that? I think the first 50 pages really portray a woman willing to put her all into education, despite the barriers of experiences. One of the most important aspects in a teachers’ career is the support they surround themselves with. In ones daily life, having to cope without support can really lead to issues. I know growing up the one thing I was good at was tennis, not because I loved it or …show more content…
It did not matter that I did not like the sport, what mattered was that my parents did all they could to support my ability to play. That is how life goes, support is like fertilizer and the more plants you tend to, the better they will grow. My sister, having a mild learning disability, was supported so heavily and still is. While my sister deserves a lot of credit for the obstacles she has overcome, its my parents who I think we both say did the most work with their dedication to her. I think Jessica, originally believed her kids to be ignorant of the finer things in life, and it was not until her eyes were opened that she in fact was the one ignorant to their needs, and their culture. I hope a a teacher I can in the beginning start off more aware towards those of a different culture and be able to cater to their needs gracefully and include hero’s in the lessons that they can look up to. Now a day, you do not see kids given a lot of variety in hero’s. Hero’s are all muscular attractive white people with little to no disability. As we grow more into society, people still shut down people of color …show more content…
It is going to be a difficult time to connect with them but it is feasible. My grandmother is from Chile and has dealt with this kind of discrimination these students see daily. My two uncles, also born in Chile, had to go through schooling with these complications in tow. My grandmother after 30 years, finally got her citizenship and I have never seen her so proud. The line we have between American citizens and those of different races I feel are to thick to really overcome the social aspect of culture differences. It disgusts me to think that not only is there no legal agreement that protects the Mexican born but that with the native Americans were forced to assimilate with us. It is disgusting to think we forced them to forget their native tongue and to become more like the white man because truly, why are we so great? I do not see the reason. America is known as the melting pot, so why is it so hard for us to accept different cultures? One of my favorite things to do when traveling is to find the designated china town. No area is as culturally rich as china town in my opinion. I feel like I learn a lot when I walk through and am able to direct questions at people about what is for sale and about books or food. Culture should be about getting to share the knowledge with appreciation but not appropriation. Not only are we not extreme enough to accept other cultures but we also go to far and begin

As educators we are continuously trying to make connections with the students we are intrusted to guide, and mentor. To create for them a foundation which will make their lives in some measurable way better. However, many educators although well versed on pedagogical practices, fail to understand the role in which creating more culturally inclusive classrooms will have dramatic improvements on whole school, and teacher student relationships. As noted by inclusiveclassrooms.org: “As teachers, so many of our exclusionary practices are ones we do not even recognize. Practices we have known and loved our whole lives may have implications for students, simply because of cultural differences.…

Introduction: As the United States of America becomes more culturally diverse in its population, the need to address that diversity within our schools is rapidly increasing. This increase in diversity is creating a challenge for educators across the nation because our nation’s teaching force remains predominately white (Caucasian)and English speaking in make-up and the number of culturally diverse teachers is in a state of decline (Gay, 2003). Educators must accept the fact that students who enter their schools/classrooms bring with them major differences concerning their cultural and ethnic background. While the original research was mainly focused on differences in culture regarding race, researchers are now paying closer attention to…

When it comes to valuing diversity in my classroom I will make sure that it is a safe place. I would take many of the ideas shown from “The Starting Small” series. Specifically from the Denver teacher, allowing people to come and present about culture. But I want my classroom to be something that kids and freely express who they are and not be judge but embraced for who they are.…

Diversity in Education Diversity is everywhere, it is part of our everyday life but when it comes to diversity in education, it becomes more apparent due to having a small group in a small area. This module, I believe, was meant to focus around how teachers are taught to teach in a cultural setting and how we receive information. In the article White Teachers, Multiracial Schools by Gary R. Howards, we learned about white Americans and the culture shock they receive when teaching or experiencing something that is racial. I know personally when I was first exposed to race I felt very attacked, due to my conservative/small town upbringing. After reading, researching, and experiencing culture and race I finally cracked. For some teachers, this type of “cracking” happens, but for others it doesn’t.…

Diversity is a gift that must be appreciated not only in our communities but also in our schools. Unfortunately, diversity is something that is often not appreciated in U.S. society and in many cases, in U.S. schools. Although I still have much to learn, after my clinical experiences at Loyola I will commit myself to educating my diverse students by supplying them with the support and resources they need to succeed in school. As a future teacher, it is my goal to furnish students, especially English Learners (ELs), with a quality education in which they are applauded and valued for their diversity. To begin, an educator has a special responsibility to advocate for and seek out social justice.…

I mentioned earlier that my seventh grade English, to be specific, teacher influence myself to become a teacher. I realized how she taught her students and engaged them in learning, and ever since then I have took note to how all my teachers teach so I could prepare myself for my future. I always love helping my younger peers with their homework and playing the imaginary game “School” with my brothers and friends. I would declare myself as the teacher and make up imaginary lessons to teach, but lessons that would reflect what I was currently learning or what my pretend students were learning in their true classrooms at school.…
