I found the sub section talking about networking was very informative. It explains the importance of creating relationships with a diverse population of people to help expand your social networking. By creating these relationships with different people from different backgrounds, the book explains “your being able to draw on a variety of diversity skills “. In addition to the information on networking I found the section Stepping Outside Of Ourselves was very interesting also. The book tries to get you to understand that diversity consciousness is being able to step outside of yourself and putting ourselves and others shoes and being open to understand their cultures. Some of the individuals I work with have a high function of intellectual disability causing them to have a different communication styles; limited speech to no speech at all. Trying to get employers to look pass the communication barrier by educating the individuals dialect. I have to be aware that not all employers will be interested in taking the time out for that accommodation which causes the individual not to be chosen for the job. Communicating inclusively is important to the human service field because after reading the steps I believe it will help me be more alert and ready to communicate and work with an individual from another culture, In addition I believe the step that states “Do some research” is the informative and it also makes since, with technology today it will take no time to look another culture so you can be aware of what kind of help you can …show more content…
I found the section on Assuming Diversity interesting. The sectioned talked about being mindful of what you put on your social media because it’s being viewed by the world, and if it’s offensive it will be seen. The book stats “we should assume our audience is diverse in ways we might not realize”. If you’re working to create a network of diverse people, you want to make sure your always being mindful and sensitive to people who are different with in everything you do.
I think this would be very useful in the human service field, due to the blooming popularity of social media now days. Social Media has its good and it also has its bad and if you’re not mindful of how you are utilizing social media it could be very harmful.
