The Importance Of Disconnecting Myself

Improved Essays
For the past 7 days I have been disconnecting myself from much of the internet. It’s not my first time doing it but it is the first time in over 7 years. It wasn't a total disconnection but I mainly used Twitter to stay informed but limited myself to only opening it a few times per day and used the rest of the internet for very specific queries like the lyrics to a song. I also didn’t give up email or IM but tried to limit my interactions as much as possible. The purpose of doing this was to see how my overall mood would improve by filling my extra time with other things mainly more passive forms of entertainment and to take more time trying to understand myself. I spend most of my time reading, I finally finished Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage which I started about a year ago and started digging into Great North Road because I'm a glutton for Peter F. Hamilton's thousand page epics. The rest of the time was split between playing games, watching TV, and meditating. …show more content…

Appreciating and Embracing our Unique Identities For me, I had always thought that literature was used as a scapegoat mechanism to escape reality, even if it was for a short period of time. Although I do not read as much before, I believe literary works allow us to analyze the deeper implicit meaning behind the ideas being presented by society. Before this course, I had failed to realize the impact to which a novel impacts the way I identify myself and appreciate my unique personality. This analysis helped me realize that not all forms of literature are true to reality. As a result, I believe that reading literature teaches us to appreciate and embrace our own identities to some extent.…

Disassociation means that one is disconnected from something completely, meaning that they are no longer affililiated with the thing that they were involved in. I would maintain being disassociated from my chapter during work week and recruitment by not wearing any apparel that may state what chapter I am affiliated with. I would also eliminate any pictures or social media that I have so potential new members cannot look up anything to find what chapter I may be in. During recruitment, I will also have all the songs memorized by every chapter so I can sing with each one with high energy to show that all of the chapters are a great choice and that it does not matter which one I am in. Hopefully this will allow the potential new members to be…

Erik Fransén, a computer science professor at the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, believes that even a single Internet session can make it more difficult for someone to keep short term memories (Gregoire): “It’s like having water poured into a glass continuously all day long, so whatever was there at the top has to spill out as the new water comes down. We’re constantly losing the information that’s just come in — we’re constantly replacing it, and there’s no place to hold what you’ve already gotten” (Schwartz). The Internet has the capability to present many things to one 's brain more rapidly than ever, overwhelming the mind and losing some of the short term memories (Gregoire). Not only does the Internet impose some frightening risks, it also can be addicting. The brains of constant internet users have actually shown similarities to brains of people addicted to drugs and alcohol (Howard): “The majority of people we see with serious Internet addiction are gamers – people who spend long hours in roles in various games that cause them to disregard their obligations” (Jones).…

The internet is useful for doing research and broadening knowledge, as it harbours millions of books and articles from around the world, but for all the great things on the Internet, there is an equal amount of time-wasting activities such as social networks, video games, and many entertainment-only websites.
