The Importance Of Digital And Online Technology

I always wake up first thing in the morning excited to see who had texted me the night before or what people were up to on social media. But, I never realized until now how often I am on my phone rather than interacting with my friends and family in person. Have you ever thought about what life would be like without all this technology that we consider an enormous part of our lives? In today’s world, technology has become very popular among a majority of the population. From the old generation to the new, digital technology has become the number one source for communication. We are so accommodated to staring at our phones for long periods at a time, we do the same even when with another person. To be more specific, I’ll always see students scrolling through Facebook and Instagram while sitting in class. Not only is this disrespectful to their teachers but they do not realize that they are losing so much useful knowledge and education. Worse than this is when a student decides to not keep his/her phone on silent, distracting the entire class. Students are constantly texting one another while sitting in class but if they were asked to participate in class, they would have a very difficult time because they lack the skills for it. Another example is when I go out to eat and see a couple on a date. On this date, at least one of them is staring at his/her phone while the other is trying to have a meaningful conversation. We have made our phones and social media a priority and have forgotten the importance of real communication. Not only is this rude but it takes away the excitement that one might have wanting to talk to you. in addition to that, many people prefer to text rather than talk on the phone or in person. In his book Modern Romance, Aziz Ansari stated that through texting, a phone self personality is created due to the differences in types of communication (Ansari, 47). Phone self is the type of personality one has when texting another and it differs completely from who we really are as a person. To be more specific, I have talked to guys that seemed very interested in me and they always seemed perfect. They would send the sweetest text messages and it would always bring a smile to my face. But, when I decided to talk to them on the phone, it was never the same feeling. They were always stuttering and having a difficult time to start the conversation or
