Vitamin D Inadequacies In Children

A diet provides individuals nourishment through the consumption of food and while maintaining a well-balanced diet is what all strive for, most diets are faulted and recently it has been shown that even children are suffering from inadequacies in their diets. In particular those associated with deficiencies in Vitamin A and Vitamin D. A study conducted by the Departments of Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, at the University of Texas SW Medical Center aimed their research towards the evaluation of vitamin D deficiencies in obese and non-overweight children they also examined their dietary habits. (UT Medical Center) Evidence suggests that Vitamin D deficiency was more prevalent in children living in the southern parts of the United State, where obesity in children is also significantly greater, however, all obese children showed a deficiency when tested. Vitamin D deficiencies were also associated with a higher risk for type 2 Diabetes in obese children and have also had also had a rise in rates of this order. (Olson)

However, not many know that mushrooms that have been exposed to sunlight can be an excellent way of obtaining Vitamin D. Research conducted by the Boston University School of Medicine discovered that eating mushrooms could not only maintain but also increase your vitamin D levels at the same time doing so in a healthy way via the consumption of healthier food choices. (BUSM) Vitamin D helps fight off infectious diseases and in many cases can decrease the risk of cancer, depression, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and even diabetes, as explained by BUSM. A study published by The Journal of Nurse Practitioners also showed similar results where it was seen that Vitamin D not only provides beneficial developmental components, but also aids in decreasing risk of cancer, obesity, and cardiovascular disease
