Dental Hygiene: A Desirable Profession

At some point, we all must make the most important decision that will determine the rest of your life. You must choose a lifelong profession; not just a job that you must go to everyday but a profession that you look forward to everyday. The profession that I have chosen to pursue is Dental Hygiene. What makes Dental Hygiene a desirable profession you ask? Dental Hygiene is a desirable profession for the following reasons its lifestyle, necessary qualities, competitive wages, rapid growth, and education. Dental hygiene is a desirable profession due to its flexible schedule it offers. As a dental hygienist, you can work part-time or full-time. Dental hygienists choose to work 3-4 days per week and they may work in more than one dental office (University). Dental hygienists work closely with dentists and dental assistants (University). You must be comfortable using a variety of machines and equipment, from basic medical devices to specialized dental tools (Christensen). You 'll need to be proficient with the tools necessary for cleaning and caring for teeth, such as probes, polishers and scalers (Christensen). Dental hygienists assist and care for others. Also, document and record client oral health information (University). It is critical to be detail oriented and of error free. Even the slightest error can endanger a client’s health. They educate clients on proper oral hygiene techniques; and counsel clients on maintaining optimal oral health (University). Therefore, you must value relationships of people. You must be a people person, be patient, and kind. Often people fear dental visits, especially for first timers.
