Shughart ends this article with a strong argument stating that it is ludicrous to think that daylight savings time makes an extra hour of natural light available to anyone as the sun will shine the same number of hours per day no matter where your clock’s hands point to. Some people seem to prefer having daylight savings time, while others prefer the opposition. The best option in Shughart’s opinion would be to pick one and stick to it. I find myself as a strong advocate of Shughart and his proposition of picking just one between standard time and daylight savings time. Shughart discusses how daylight savings time just results in people being less productive and the disruption of our circadian rhythms.…

Cancer, depression, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity are all health risks increased exponentially due to this exposure. Circadian rhythms are a twenty-four hour cycle in the physiological processes of living beings. In a study, Harvard researchers gradually shifted the timing of ten people’s circadian rhythms. The results showed an increase in blood sugar levels, causing them to go into a pre-diabetic state, and a decrease in leptin levels, which inhibits hunger.…

It was implemented in the United States during both world wars and was later standardized by the Uniform Time Act in 1966. Nowadays, controversy surrounding the subject has supporters claiming that Daylight Savings Time conserves energy otherwise spent on artificial light; promotes outdoor activities in the evening, reduces traffic accidents, and is beneficial for businesses. This paper will present and explore the opposing view that changes in energy usage over the years have made Daylight Savings Time obsolete, as it no longer serves the goal for which it was developed. Actual energy savings are inconclusivein some cases…

When the current form of the body was developed, however, the time it would take to walk across a time zone would give the internal clock time to adjust. Humans have no built in mechanisms to combat modern day travel fatigue, so extra precautions and tactics should be followed to keep humans at top efficiency. All humans feel effects similar to jet lag twice a year, and the precautions needed for modern day travel are similar to those that can be taken during a Daylight Savings change. Going to bed a little earlier or later, depending on which way you are traveling, and light therapy, exposing yourself to light to wake your internal clock up, are a few things more and more people like…
