The actual violence aspect of dating violence is when a perpetrator, whether they are male or female, uses physical force to control the actions and behaviors of a given victim (Alexander, 2014). As previously stated, violence and abuse touches on more than merely physical damage to one’s body, it includes the mental and psychological effects as well. Dating violence has many similarities with domestic violence such as manipulation, humiliation, intimidation, terrorizing, threatening, and physical injury (About, 2015). There have been studies over preventative measures, but the most frequently studied would be the empowerment of self-defense (Hollander, 2014). Self-defense is not a method of advocating violence and abuse, but how to escape being a victim through learning how to protect your own body (Rheingold). If a woman was being attacked by a potential rapist, putting up a fight increases their chances of rape not being completed. By putting up a fight, one should make very clear that they do not want to be touched or harassed by the perpetrator by screaming and physically fighting. They should not plead, cry, or try to reason with the rapist because that makes them feel as though they hold greater power over the individual (Rheingold, n.d.). Self-defense has been proven to decrease the fears and anxiety of women, furthermore increasing their self-esteem and confidence. Weaker people make for easier targets, so one should be sure to hold themselves in a confident manner (Hollander, 2014). By taking self-defense classes, individuals would be educated on the prevention of all forms of violence such as increasing awareness, using verbal strategies, and physical techniques. However, dedication is required to master self defense as it takes hours of practice weekly.
