Most of the customers at the A&P store are mostly old and have no excitement unlike the girls. When Sammy describe one of the customers, he said “a witch about fifty with rouge on her cheekbones and no eyebrows” which shows that Sammy does not like the customers that are old he was expecting someone young and exciting. It was a great awakening for Sammy because he is coming of age and the girls only gives him more confident in himself due to the way both Sammy and the girls want to be different form rest of the people. What make Sammy more interested in the girls is that “sheep pushing their carts down the aisle” while the “the girls were walking against the usual traffic” which makes the girls different from the normal “sheep” routine.
