Before Europeans travelled to new continents, there was very minimal contact between countries that were far away. Trading of goods would only occur in nearby countries. So when the conquistadors came to the new land which had not been exposed to other life forms than that of those around them, many diseases broke out. Such as smallpox, ……… More than half of the population was wiped out by diseases within a century. Some new diseases travelled to the Old World as well but it did not do as much damage as was done to the New World. Some scientists suggest the possibility that these new diseases were already occurring in the New World, they just weren’t documented until the spaniards came along. The natives weren’t the only people who had been attacked by diseases; the spaniards on arriving back to spain, spread a disease to the common folk killing many.
