Civil War Influence On American Culture

Culture is a major part of daily life. It tells us who we are, allows us to express ourselves, and identifies where we are from or what we value. Culture has changed drastically over the years as styles go in and out of fashion or different resources are available or effective. This was particularly prevalent during the Civil War when limited resources were available and certain, unique needs had to be met. The culture of this time reflects this as demonstrated through its music, fashion, art, and food.

Music is what sets the scene for the world around us. Soundtracks in movies tell us something big is going to happen or when a romantic moment is happening. It creates the mood, adds suspense, and adds excitement. Our favorite song can make us dance or sing in the car or boost the lowest of moods. It was no different during the Civil War. Soldiers would march to the beat of battle songs. This would prepare them for battle and keep them in time with one another. Bugles and drums were a major part of a soldier 's daily life. Paintings, colors, and photographs gave us the ability to be in the war without actually being there.

Paintings allow us to view a moment in time that we wouldn’t usually be able to be there for. Paintings give us that ability to feel and imagine as if we were there and see the landscape as well as the beautiful scenery. What paintings give us is the freedom to examine that spot in time and figure out its meaning and purpose behind it.

The color of a painting gives feeling to the viewer. Warm colors are inviting and give a happy as well as cozy feeling. These warm colors can also give us the feeling of excitement and different passions. Dark and gray colors give a shady look to the background and the area of the
