Months dedicated to nationalities were first created not only to highlight the success the people of that ethnicity had on history, but to also celebrate the heritage, and cultural aspects of different nationalities. Commonly, the idea of the months dedicated to different inheritances was formed to bring the spotlight onto individuals and events of diverse cultural origins that had a large impact on American history. Without these months, historical heroes like Martin Luther King Jr., and special cultural days like Mexico’s Independence Day could possibly be left in the future shadows. This brings in new knowledge of a different or same culture that not only educates the children but the other household members as well. Teaching cultural diversity is necessary because it gives people a different perspective on how other people of their community and country see and go about with their everyday lives. On the topic on why cultural diversity is so necessary is more4kids.org which states in their article National Hispanic Heritage Month 2015- The Importance of Cultural Diversity, “We are all consistently learning from one another; however, in order to learn it all, we must have a basic understanding of each other. This basic understanding will aid in the process of facilitating both collaboration among groups and cooperation.” Learning to be objective and informed to all nationalities is vital when it comes to dealing with future communication barriers and so called bumps in the road that cultural differences may be the cause of. The only way for students to be even the slightest culturally aware and educated is if we keep heritage months due to their vital impact on education. If it weren’t for heritage months people would be stuck in their own ethnic bubble with little to no factual knowledge on other cultures, and in worse circumstances even their own. Without this knowledge individuals would be wounded in the workforce and day-to-day socialization.
