Misericordia holds many cultural events to expand the students’ knowledge of others heritage. Culture makes the world unique and influences the way people view the world. The early works of English poetry represent the struggles in life while demonstrating the beliefs around the period. The movement and poetry the class read display many courageous warriors. The cultural events at Misericordia University such as sporting events, immigration simulation, Wit, and It’s On Us resemble English poetry and movements.

“That fact is, Unferth, if you were truly as keen or courageous as you claim to be Grendel would never have got away with such unchecked atrocity, attacks on your king, Havoc in Heorot and horrors everywhere” (Beowulf 53-54.) One of the most important factors an athlete can possess is remaining calm and collected. A captain demonstrates these qualities much like Beowulf. For instance, many other knights and commoners admire Beowulf for his fighting skills and his charming attitude. Usually a team designates a captain, which the younger teammates respect and look for advice. Beowulf leads his people through action and remain loyal to his king. A sports captain does not need to be the best on the team but needs to possess a tremendous attitude. A captain wants to win, but never yells at her teammates and encourages them when they are down. A true leader is nice to the other players on and off the field. Sometimes to win a game the players need more than just skill alone; the team needs to possess hard work and commitment. Beowulf experiences a similar fate during his battle with Grendel’s mother. “But he soon found …show more content…

The men of the household travel to cities and leave their family to earn more money. Then the men send the money back to the family to give them a better life. The men risk their joy with their family to provide more for them. After people venture to other countries, some of the current citizens chastise the new people in their country. During the simulation, the workers in the United States gave the immigrants trouble and did not treat them with respect. Misericordia recently held many It’s On Us meetings to help the campus gain knowledge on the matter. The campaign represents the unfortunate reality of sexual abuse and rape. The university live streamed a video of an interview of a man speaking about his book on sexual violence. A close family friend who was raped inspired him to write the book. During his interview, he demonstrated many stereotypes of those who sexual abuse others, but he provided a valid point on sexual abuse to the

When the tributes to be sent to the Minotaur were chosen, “ Theseus came forward and offered to be one of the victims. All loved him for his goodness and admired him for his nobility.” (212). This quote perfectly exemplifies why these amazing heroes went on these quests, because not only did Theseus volunteer himself after just getting to meet his father, but people then admired him for his brave action. There was no way to know what the strength of the Minotaur was like and whether or not Theseus could even defeat it, but Theseus decided to go about this all on his own and find a way to save his newly found father from the treacherous King Minos. This quest was Theseus’ own right of passage.…

I’m the best soldier they ever had.” Some may look at this comment as being good because Ender is being confident about his skill and ability in battle. I look at this comment as taking heavy influence from his teachers Mazer Rackham and Graff, whose personalities I personally would not like to take too much influence from because of their brutal, close minded way of thinking. In conclusion, Ender shows that his environment has affected his personality and caused him to become more violent. Ender is not the only character that shows sympathy and is affected by their environment, there are a…

This teaches us that having the desire to maintain a good reputation can help us overcome adversaries in life. “Hygelac’s kinsman kept thinking about his name and fame: he never lost heart.” Beowulf (1529-1530). Here it shows that what kept motivating Beowulf to continue fighting was because he valued his name more than anything because he knew that his name was the only thing that will speak for him even after his death. Having good name does not only brings you fame, but it also brings you honor.…

In both works, it is honorable to win in battle, then give the spoils of war to the king. In Beowulf, the king does not trust Beowulf even though he is an accomplished warrior in his homeland. It is only when Beowulf proved himself in battle against both Grendel and Grendel’s mother then bestows the hilt of the weapon to Hrothgar that Beowulf gains complete admiration of the king. In contrast, King Henry trusts Hotspur because he is consistently successful in battle, despite the fact that Hotspur had never given King Henry anything won in war. Hotspur did not need to earn the king’s trust by gifts like Beowulf, but loses the trust when he refuses to surrender the spoils of war, the captured soldiers, to his new…
