Culture describes one’s beliefs, language, attitudes and preferences that people begin the process of learning at birth (Anderson, 2012). Lack of understanding of patients’ culture can lead to poor compliance and unsuccessful outcome. Nurses as patients’ advocates need to place patients’ value on priority. These days, there are many people who can’t speak English or very limited who came to US for many different reasons. However, they have equal right to receive good quality of healthcare with their cultural respect. To provide quality of care and cultural respect, staffs need to have cultural competence. The first intervention to have cultural competence is cultural awareness self- assessment of one’s cultural background and differences.
