Critical Infrastructure is a term used to describe assets that are essential for the functioning of a society and economy, the infrastructure. The systems and networks that make up this infrastructure are often taken for granted, and a disruption to one of these systems will have dire consequences across other sectors. There are 16 critical infrastructure sectors in the United States whose assets, systems, and networks are vital to our security, national economic security, national public health or safety, or any combination thereof and are diverse and complex. The Emergency Services Sector (ESS) is another infrastructure that is directly affected by the Communications Sector. The ESS is a community of millions of highly-skilled, trained personnel, along with the physical and cyber resources, that provide a wide range of prevention, preparedness, response, and recover services during both day-to-day operations and incident response (Emergency Services Sector, 2017). This sector depends on communications for directing resources. If there are no communications available, resources cannot be directed which can cost people their lives. Being able to coordinate with other agencies and first responders during an emergency also requires some form of communication. Alerting the public and warning systems are critical in an emergency, and without those warnings people’s lives are put in danger that they otherwise would not be in. Communications has also made making 9-1-1 calls easier for society. Before cell phones we had to use our landline phones and depending on the emergency situation we might not have access to a phone. Our national security and emergency resources rely heavily on communication systems which makes the communications sector the most vital sector in America’s critical infrastructure sectors. National security is not just protection from a military attack, but it also includes economic security (Financial Services Sector), energy security (Energy Sector), environmental security, food security (Food and Agriculture Sector) , and cyber security (Information Technology Sector). Whether it is to make money, cause embarrassment or gain notoriety, hackers are targeting our most critical infrastructure – communications (Claborn, 2017). Being able to communicate is critical in our society today. Without communication we suffer. Our Energy, Information Technology, Financial Services, Emergency Services, and Transportation Systems Sectors are all affected if we lose our communication
