The Importance Of Cooking In Guatemala

Decent Essays
Food is a very diverse way to bring people together. Families reunite to cook meals together and spend quality time with each other. Others use food to get to know someone, whether it’s a date or having a business meeting. It’s a great way to show the different cultures around the world and the many ways cooking is represented. Things like tamales, platanos fritos and many other dishes make any Guatemalan feel at home. Since I was born here in the United States, I have been exposed to many other foods. I have friends from everywhere and can say that I have experienced tasting these amazing foods. Places like Korea, Mexico, El Salvador,

In the article “We Are What We Eat: We Are a Nation of Immigrants!” by David Rosengarten, he discusses the distinct influences and development of cuisine in the United States. Over many years, food has changed the national diet in America. Food has changed because of the immigrants coming to America in the past. Americans have adopted and adapted these different cuisines and it “has sparked a richness and diversity in the fare on America’s dinner tables and in its restaurants” (Rosengarten 216).…

Two plump brown faces peered around the corner at me, their wide brown eyes taking in my pale complexion and straight brown hair. Hearing their giggles I turned and looked up at them before responding with one of the only phrases I knew of the spanish language, “hola” “¿cómo estás?” This caused a panic and they quickly disappeared, laughing to themselves and speaking in a language I had only begun to understand. A few seconds later I could feel their eyes staring down at me again, I quickly shot my head around to stare at them again, this caused them to dart away even quicker before being followed by a uproar of giggles. This experience was something I had grew quite accustomed to in my short time in Guatemala.…

Sharing food with my family helps us learn the importance of family and cultural traditions. In my family while having dinner we are not allowed to use phones because my dad says that mealtime is family time, so we should only concentrate on eating and talking with family members. Last November, a week before Thanksgiving, I was listening to the morning radio talk show The Woody Show and the hosts were talking about how excited they were for the Thanksgiving feast. They all went around and shared what was their perfect meal for that day. It ranged from fried turkey, to stuffing, cornbread, green bean casserole, and towards the end the hosts argued about cranberry sauce. However, they all agreed that pumpkin pie was essential to the perfect meal. I found it very interesting that while they argued about the way the meal was executed, they all agreed on the basic components to the meal-I didn’t.…

This means that meat is natural and there is no use of chemical fertilizers in order to increase the amount of crop harvest. However, meat in South Africa is got from genetically modified animals and also chemical fertilizers are used to boost crop harvest. I remember the first time I went for lunch on my first day in South Africa, it was my first time to see chicken meat which is three times the normal size of chicken.…
