Canada's Contributions To The Second World War

“Our veterans – ordinary Canadians who accomplished extraordinary things – represent the best of Canada, the freedoms that Canadians enjoy today are because of them, and Canadians owe it to them to remember.” Said Minister of Veteran Affairs Greg Thompson on the 65th anniversary of D-day landing. Canadian soldiers fought for freedom in the Second World War and selflessly support for the allies. The contributions that Canada has made in this were essential, and the most significant support was the war at sea. At the beginning of World War Two, Germany has captured most of Europe and the Allies wouldn’t get any supplies directly anymore. In order to battle them, scientist also invented better defensive technology and this was how new method to combat started to appear such as sea war. Sonar, radar, anti-submarine weapons and variety of ships were wildly and effectively used by the Royal Canadian Navy. Radar technology was passed along from Britain to Canada and Canadian scientist continued to make refinement and created the Plan Position Indicator and it was used till today. Ultimate Antisubmarine weapons were used by Royal Canadian Navy such as squid – a three barreled mortar that replaced another mortar called the Hedgehog. Canadian corvettes were also significant as they were small, cheap and could be quickly built, and the corvettes got a chance to improve between the years 1942 - 1943 and had better equipment. In addition, a data shown that the allied merchant ships sunk by submarines in the year 1942 were 1200 and 1943 were about 400. One article described the Canadian fleet in the end of a battle “Until at the end of the battle, the Royal Canadian Navy had a total of 254 seagoing escort ships engaged.” (Globe and Mail). Germany’s purpose was to sink as much merchant ships in the Atlantic as they can so they used U-Boats (German Submarines) to attack.
