The Importance Of Connotating For Writing

Improved Essays
I feel that I’ve done a fairly well with reading, writing, thinking, listening, and speaking this term. There are however, things I haven’t put my full effort into and things I need to work on for class next term.
For reading this term, I have read every assignment and I read most fairly thoroughly. I always annotate, but not always as well as I should. I think I really need to work on annotating and reading more in depth on the assignments. I also need to work on looking up words or references I may not understand more often, because I think that this would help me to understand the reading on a deeper level. I’ll continue to be consistent with reading the assignments, and for next term I will try to really dig into the reading by annotating

Writing can be difficult for me when I only have a certain amount of time, because I often have a hard time getting all my ducks(ideas) in a row. One essay I was particularly proud of this term was the most recent one, the in class writing on a poem. I feel that even though I struggled with the organization of my ideas, and went off on a tangent at the end, there was definitely some potential for my future writing on poems. I also didn’t struggle as much as I thought I would, even though I still did. I definitely need to work on the organization of my writing for the next term, in order to incorporate all of my ideas in a way that makes more sense. I also need to not procrastinate as much on reviewing terms when I know there will be an in class writing. Next term I will try to come up with a better system for organizing my ideas so that they are better portrayed on paper. For thinking and listening this term, I usually thought very carefully about my assignments, and I listened to in class instructions and my peers opinions. As with reading, I think I need to dive deeper into my ideas while I’m thinking. For listening, I think I might need to write more things down, as I’m a forgetful person. I’m not very proud of the fact that things often slip my mind, only to remember them later and proceed to panic (i.e. This reflection). For next term I will work on my thinking and listening skills in not just AP Lit but in my other classes as well, and I will write things down more

Generally, my overall goal for this course, as I stated in week one, was to “make my writing more orderly, less time-consuming, and more efficient overall.” As I reflect on the progress I have made, I recognize that I have had some success in meeting this goal, although I still have room for improvement. Thanks to our experience in composing outlines, my writing is better organized and more concise.…

During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

Over the last four essays, my ability to write has improved exponentially from the beginning of the year. Through the four essays I have learned valuable skills that will be the support for future essays. On the two beginning essays my ability to use vocabulary and other valuable skills was improving. By being supplied by information from the instructor, and fellow classmates I was able to spot my weaknesses in my writing and improve where improvement was needed. As the semester progress each essay improved upon the last as self reflection and reflection from others was used wisely.…

Last Day Diagnostic Today is my last day with English 101 and I’m pretty happy with how I have done over the course of these 15 weeks. English is certainly not my strongest class that I have taken and I often criticize my work, which makes it very difficult to write anything at all. I always have a lot to say but to get it down on a piece of paper is usually very hard for me. However, for this semester in English 101, I felt that I did a pretty good job at getting all my ideas down and have been pretty happy with my grades for each essay. I definitely have come a long way in this class and in English all together, which is very reassuring to be able to overcome one of my tougher classes without any issues at all.…

Throughout this semester, I have genuinely learned a lot. AP College English is definitely a difficult course for me, but I have strived to make efforts in changing that. It’s difficult to pinpoint all the things that I have learned during the course. I have learned many things about novels, authors, grammar, writing, reading, and the list goes on. Every year in English I have learned something new and this year is absolutely no different.…

I would say that the development of my reading throughout the semester was a puzzle being constantly worked on and added to. I started out the semester at the point in the puzzle where the edges were complete and I could see the big picture being revealed to me. I knew the basics of reading and interpreting and had the necessary skills to effectively tackle whatever piece of literature chosen for us. However, I was missing major sections of the puzzle and had gaps in my knowledge. I never had an appreciation for poetry or quite as deep of understandings of literature that this class helped me to achieve.…

Like I previously stated I learned how to do many things with my writing this semester. The first essay we wrote, a narrative, was probably my favorite essay to write. I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. Likewise, my voice can be read strongly throughout the personal narrative essay, because the passion I had for my topic was an emotional one.…

I’ve chosen to focus on “Exploration and Argumentation” as the subject of this reflective introduction, specifically looking at my argument paper, “Abortion: Right or Wrong?” as a reference to the importance of this learning outcome. I chose to focus on this particular learning outcome because it was the most difficult essay for me to create. While writing this essay it was difficult for me to understand and reciprocate the opposing viewpoint. Understanding an unfamiliar idea and giving ideas for or against a topic is key to creating a fluent argumentative essay.…

Connotative meaning is the non-literal and associative meaning that a word or phrase has in addition to its central meaning. This part of meaning shows people's emotions and attitudes towards what the word or phrase refers to. For example, the denotative meaning of the word "child" could be as 'a young human being', but it can be associated with, e.g. affectionate, amusing, lovable, sweet, and grubby (Richards and Schmidt, 2010: 118). According to Leech (1981: 12), this type of meaning is beyond the denotative meaning of words.…

My approach to reading has changed over the semester. Before this class, I would just read without taking notes. In reading, I would just read instead of looking up the difficult word or using context clues to figure out what the word means. Now during my reading I annotate and look up unknown vocabulary words. When I look up the difficult word, I would find the closest appropriate definition.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
