NFL has recently been looking into helmet technology with U.S. military and army. One idea that has been established involves “Pads lining the inside of the helmet are vital to absorbing the shock. They can vary in material, stiffness, and thickness” (Shyr, 2013). Although there is already padding that lines the inside of football helmets they are trying to make advances in padding where it absorbs the entire shock of the hit or blow to completely protect the head. They are comparing football helmets to technology where “…the Army has tens of thousands of sensors placed in the crown of certain soldiers' helmets to measure the forces exerted on their heads” (Shyr, 2013). This could help help a lot because the sensors would be able to give insight to where football players take the most blows to the head and there could be extra padding there. Another solution they are beginning to test is “a simple collar worn by athletes that compresses vessels in the neck to increase cranial blood volume, thereby reducing internal movement of the brain” (Cole, 2013).
