As the world of technology continues to progress in an exponential rate, portable technologies such as laptops, tablets, phones, etc. continue to become more accessible to students due to their decrease in cost and size. With greater accessibility and affordable prices, universities across the globe have seen a giant influx of laptops among their classes across various disciplines. In a class like CCT109, there is no need for laptops as the lectures are often discussion oriented rather than simply being fact oriented. According to many student accounts, typing notes rather than writing is more convenient as typing tends to be faster and also lightens up the weight of their backpack. However, students can easily use the lockers provided by the university in order to store excessive materials not needed for the class which could also lighten the weight of the backpack. In addition, according to a paper published in journal of Psychological Science, two researchers Pam Mueller and Daniel Oppenheimer found that writing notes rather than typing helps by providing students with a better grasp of subject materials being taught in class. This would give the students writing notes far better advantage over those typing it in test taking skills, written explanations, reasoning behind answers, etc. making them more successful in the course. In addition, written notes are much easier to customize in terms of adding anecdotes, underlines, diagrams, etc. compared to the typed notes which often fall into the limits of word processors being used by the students. In laptops, a simple system failure can result in years of course materials and notes being lost which are usually very difficult to recover. This could cause students in not being able to prepare for tests, assignments, etc. negatively affecting their performance on the subject. Banning laptops would eradicate similar problems and would ensure that everyone is on the same page and no one has any difficulty regarding their technology. This would also make tasks such as report marking, essay marking and assignment marking less complicated for teaching assistants as they would now not have to worry about problems such as word file compatibility, assignment submission hub, etc. making marking process much easier and hassle

Along with increasing our academic freedom, it also reduces the risk of a teacher favoring a student, or even worse having biased views against students. With online classes you are never actually face to face with instructors, so they cannot decide on a personal level whether like you or not. Even though it is unprofessional for a teacher to act in such a way, there is no way to get around certain bias believes that an individual may have. One final reason that I believe online courses are better for some people, is that certain individuals cannot work in extended periods of time on tasks. Many people have very short attention spans, and forcing them to divulge in uninteresting material for hours at a time can actually be harmful to their learning experience.…

Also, more research shows that notes taken on a laptop are more just copied notes, they have more verbatim to them. If the students didn’t understand in class they won’t understand when they look back in their notes because it’s just copy of what the teacher said. “Content analysis consistently showed that students who used laptops had more verbatim transcription of the lecture material than those who wrote notes by hand.” (May 2) This further more backs up the point on why computers are bad for note taking. Some people may argue that using laptops are a lot easier because you can type faster as well as get most of everything that is said during the lecture, but if the studies say that it makes the notes…

“The Pen Is Mightier Than the Keyboard: Advantages of Longhand Over Laptop Note Taking” In recent years, taking notes by using a laptop has become increasingly common among students attending lectures. It is evident from previous studies that if laptops are used for note taking while surfing the web or for other distractions, it will impair the learning process. However, this study aims to show that even without these distractions, students will perform worse than longhand note takers because they have the tendency to write the notes verbatim, instead of making into their own words. This is a vital part of learning because this means that students are processing the information that they are given, instead of writing exactly what they hear.…
