Computers are very vital in nursing education as they are able to store and make information available by processing it quickly. It helps to facilitate audio-visual representation of information that is taught and as such making the learning process to be both interesting and interactive. The computer assisted teaching is probably one of the best things that has happened to nursing education as it enables nurses gain more understanding and knowledge from different learning environments. The continuous professional development of nurses has been enhanced through computers. I am in Nigeria and attending a school overseas. We have lectures recorded on videos which can be listened to while in transit to and from work. The lecture notes can be assessed at any time and exams are also taken from home or wherever it is convenient. There is nothing more than enriching and building capacity like education. As a nurse I have been enriched in knowledge and skills as a result of computers in nursing education. The modular system of the school also makes me take on course at a time and as such reducing the stress level and helping me balance my work and family life. There are classroom discussions facilitated by the lecturers and if I am not available in class, I can always read up the discussions and get the substance of the topics discussed. I have referred colleagues and friends to enrol in the school. However, some feel that it is stressful and cannot cope. So I decided to encourage them to enrol in some courses in diabetes and cancer care online that are free for them to have a feel of what an online/distance learning is all about. At the end of these courses they take exams and present the certificates of completion and pass. These are filed and used as part of appraisal. I have also just enrolled twelve in a free course at the university of Dundee in the UK which will last for 5 weeks. All these has helped in boosting their morale and they now have the I CAN DO IT ATTITUDE which is a gain for the image of the profession when we consider the team in the mist of other
