In my home, I am known as the IT department. Whenever anyone in my family needs technical support, they come ask me. My family first noticed my knack for computer skills when we got our first family computer. I would always be playing around with settings and games. One day when the display starting giving artifacts, I knew what the problem was: the computer needed a new graphics card. From that day forward I have been solving problems, building computers, and doing so much more. The simplest issues I fix occur on a bi-weekly basis and usually include fixing the printer, restarting the router, or force quitting an application. However, fixing the printer is not

This job started when I built my first computer. To build a computer, I first had to understand what all goes into a computer and what is most important for each computer task. For example, if you are running a headless server, like I was, a graphics card is not too important, or even necessary. A few years after I built my server, I decided I wanted to build my own personal computer. During a free day in Spanish II, we had a substitute, I started browsing online computer hardware stores and forums. I created not one, two, or three, but nine different configurations over the next 5 months before I had determined which one I wanted the most and was the best for my money. Using this process, I have built a total of five systems: a server and a personal computer for myself, a friend, my brother, and another good friend. I have not asked for anything in return from my brother or friends because I enjoy this process so much; that by them having me design and build a computer for them, it is a favor from them to

I guess they were right, since I would have mastered something but instead I chose to play computer games on every free time I have. To tell the truth, I’ve spent way over 1500 hours playing computer games alone on my free time last year. I know that doesn’t sound much for a year, but I was an exchange student in Germany! But we’ll get back to that later. Speaking about that, my favorite computer game of all time has got to be the Counter Strike franchise.…

I had assumed that the class would teach students how to operate the computer. Within the first week of class, I found out how wrong I was. The class taught students how to perform tasks such as store information and format documents and work with various office/productivity programs. Knowledge of working with computers was apparently a prerequisite. With my limited knowledge with computers, I initially struggled in that class.…

After spending a year learning how to program, I decided that I finally had the foundation to do what I wanted to do all along—create a game After my friend agreed to work together, we continued the project that we first started our freshman year of high school. While being involved in both of these activities, I learned about the amount of effort it takes to create something so simple. In the beginning, I spent countless hours trying to figure out how to map our sprites onto the screen and how to bridge a connection between our robot and the controller. However, the more time I spent working, the more adept I became at programming. Future issues that came up were easier to handle because I had developed my thought process enough to solve the issues.…

I later intend to become a computer hardware engineer. I want to take this path because I’ve been linked to computers my whole life. As a kid, I would tinker with my father’s old PC. I played games and downloaded random files. I would be on the computer for hours trying to get rid of a virus that my game brought up.…

Building the computer was really easy, but I had to research for months to decide the parts I wanted. It taught me how to research; how to collect a vast amount of knowledge on a topic and use it to solve a problem. I spent all the money that I had. I ended up having a really decently high-end computer. I started to learn more challenging subjects, like 3D modeling, programming, and basic electronic…

I introduced it too late last year to really have any effect on my students, but this year I explicitly taught Storybird. Overall, I feel this lesson had great value to the students and they learned a lot, even just from the lessons about how to log onto the computer and how to get to a website. Again, the students should have received a more explicit lesson right before they were able to get on the computer, modeled on a computer just like theirs. I feel they should have a more explicit lesson on how to use the keyboard and how to get to websites, but that is probably the next computer lesson that will be taught. I feel this was a great lesson for students to begin using their creativity on the web, giving them access to a new resource they can now use and practice their typing and writing…

Eventually I started learning about computers in school and I found them so fun to use. My dad then took an online course in the basic office applications and I completed them all long before him and so I actually started doing his PowerPoint slides for his presentations. So I found that I kind of had a knack for using them so I really began to focus on it. I worked super hard in my Computer Studies classes and did moderately well in them. As most regular kids, I always went straight for the games whenever I got the chance often wrecking the keyboards in the process.…
