From medical devices made by companies like Medtronic, based in Minnesota, to new, safer cars, designed and manufactured by Toyota in Japan. All around the world, computer engineers are collaborating to create more for the world, to improve the quality of life for people everywhere, and to save lives. In Japan in 2014, Shuji Nakamura was selected to receive the 2014 Order of Culture Award, one of Japan’s highest honors, in part for his invention of the blue Light Emitting Diode, or LED. This led to the creation of the white LED, which, as an energy-efficient lighting breakthrough, could help improve the lives of people with little to no access to electricity, such as those in small African villages (Energy Weekly News, 2014). Nakamura was bestowed the honor by the Emperor of Japan himself, Akihito, on the Day of Culture in Japan last November. Earlier in the year, Nakamura was awarded with the 2014 Nobel Prize for Physics. This award was also for his development of the blue LED, and for his “Unparalleled breakthroughs in physics, materials science, and technology.” Nakamura was, first and foremost, an engineer. His work with electronics and computers classifies him as a computer engineer. This is just one example of the astounding work computer engineers can do. That could have been anyone of them. All they needed was a …show more content…
They focus on helping young and upcoming engineers interested in electrical and computer engineering focus their visions. They also provide workshops designed to inspire these budding engineers and provide them with ideas for new visions and concepts. One thing they strongly encourage is the fact that anyone can do the things they do. Many of the workshops they hold are advertised as “No experience needed.” In fact, you could show up to a meeting with little to no computer experience and learn from them. They are always glad to welcome new members, and help returning members advance (UW Stout Branch of the IEEE, 2015). A big part of the reason why they put so much emphasis on not needing any experience to come to meeting is because of the way computer engineering happens. Often, the technologies that exist when the students are in college will be obsolete by the time they finish. New computer engineers often require on the job training and need to learn new technologies and ideas often. In fact, computer engineers sometimes joke about it being their job to Google things. While this isn’t strictly true, it can often seem like most of the vision parts of the job are browsing the internet, reading up on new
