As of October 2015, the Guttmacher Institute, a New York-based research organization, found that twenty-two states and the District of Columbia mandate sex education -- and eighteen require that information on contraception be provided (Toppo). With only twenty-two states and the District of Columbia mandating sex education, so many young adults and students are missing out on the proper education they need to make decisions about their sex lives. The United States is failing these young people by not mandating that sex education be taught. Forty-eight states do not mandate sex education and these kids are growing up to suffer. They are suffering from STD’s, HIV and AIDS, unwanted pregnancies, and more, but this could be changed with a …show more content…
It is not wrong to learn both abstinence and comprehensive sex education, however; it is wrong to withhold an education from young adults with very active hormones who could be at risk for the many high-risk factors that come along with sexual intercorse. Abstinence education, according to Kekla Magoon, author of Sex Education In Schools, “means voluntarily choosing not to have sex” (8). As Magoon also implies, marriage is a big factor of why people abstain from sex, but there are many more like being able to prevent themselves for coming into contact with any of the consequences that are taught in comprehensive sex education. While the United States should be supporting programs that are encouraging people to abstain from sex, the US government and President Barack Obama are doing the complete opposite. As reported in the article “Sex Education,” of 2016, “the US government eliminated all funding for abstinence-only sex education in public schools. It is rather ridiculous to cut all funding when just six years previous to this a study was conducted, an article from the National Review, by Robert Rector, entitled “The president’s new sex ed: so long, love, abstinence, and marriage,” clearly states, “The study found that an eight-hour abstinence course …show more content…
The main problem is not that the media did not represent the case though. The main problem is that the US government and the President of the United States failed to recognize these statistics that helped prevent some young people from participating in sexually risky behavior. In the article “Sex Education,” of 2016, it is stated that, “President Barack Obama (1961-) cut all abstinence-based sex education funding from the 2017 budget. While this did not stop private institutions from providing abstinence-only education, public schools that wished to continue to teach abstinence-based sex education would not receive federal funds for it.
According to the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS), thirty years of studies showed that abstinence-only education failed to reduce the rate of premarital intercourse or teenage pregnancies. Because of this, the Obama administration redirected sex education funding to comprehensive sex education. Part of Obama’s new budget proposal included a $4 million increase for the Teen Pregnancy Prevention

    a. A quote from Emily Bridges, MLS, in an article published by the Future of Sex Education (FoSE) in 2014, stresses the need for a reformation in sex education curriculum in schools with this alarming statistic, “Young people ages 15-24 account for 25% of all new HIV infections in the U.S. and make up almost one-half of the over 19 million newly diagnosed STD infections Americans acquire each year.” b. Virginity pledges ( /// ) are a key problem in the lack of STD education because students don’t know the risks of other sexual interactions. A quote from Peter Bearman, Ph.D., in an article published by Science Direct in April 2005 reports, “Because virginity is often culturally linked only to vaginal sex, to preserve virginity, adolescents and young adults may engage in other sexual behaviors that involve exchange of fluid and are thus salient for STD acquisition.”…

Well, this is because most schools teach abstinence-only sex education. Abstinence sex means not participating in sexual activity before marriage. Kelly J. Bell breaks down the reasons that the United States educations system is failing and shows how other countries have been succeeding in their sex education in her 2009 article “Wake up and Smell the Condoms”. She tells us the United States report higher pregnancy, younger sex ages, less effective prevention, and higher reports of on prevention used at all. In 1981 school began teaching abstinence-only sex education to schools that wanted to teacher them as part of their every day curriculum (Bell). Schools in certain states and districts where not required to do so until March of 2016 (NCSL).…

Abstinence only education does not engage in sexual intercourse or as a commitment to wait until marriage. Even though abstinence means having the protection toward sexually transmitted diseases and preventing pregnancy, not all young adults are willing to practice abstinence. Therefore the right thing to do is offer comprehensive sexual health education to adolescents, so they can be taught the methods used to prevent pregnancies and how to protect…

I suggest Germantown Hills Junior High switch to a comprehensive sexual education course. The current sex education course does nothing more than try to scare kids out of having sex by showing them pictures of diseases. This is no way to be teaching teens about their bodies and how intercourse works. Germantown does not explain how to use contraception or how sex affects people physically and emotionally. I believe it is important for young people to get information that could help them protect their health physically and…

Also, people who are allergic to latex, cannot use that has an excuse not to use one; because there are latex free condoms available. Studies show that when teenagers are educated on safe sex, as well as abstinence, they are more likely to take their time before they have sex for the first time. In 2012, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney debated over Planned Parenthood and defunding the organization. The scale of how many women use their services is large and Obama was against taking away the federal fund to keep it up and running. They give out sex education to about 1.5 million people a year.…

In a sense, comprehensive sex refutes certain aspects from abstinence-only education. The philosophy on comprehensive sex ed is that it relieves youths from being ignorant about sex and teaches them how to deal with it in case they decide to stray from abstinence. A major motive for this program is that abstinence-only education would not help those who are willing to say yes to sex. Many people (approx. 60%) who actually pledge to say “no” to sex actually change their response, proved by a study conducted by the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health.…

Many citizens in the US advocate very thoroughly that comprehensive sex education is almost like a poison that can’t be treated and the only way that sex education should be taught is with abstinence only. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. It is easily seeable that in countries that embrace abstinence-only education there is a major rise in sexually active teens. A thorough comprehensive sex education curriculum needs to be part of basic school education nationwide. Believing that keeping teens away from sex and teaching can be seen the only way to keep children safe from sex.…

What I do know is that many schools in our country don’t have good sex-ed programs. Even if there are sex-ed programs, it is most often an abstinence only class so teens will not know how to use proper protection. Abstinence is a great choice, arguably the best choice, but youth also need to know all the facts. A comprehensive sex-ed class that is abstinence based is fine, as long as it teaches everything needed. Not teaching comprehensive sex-ed can lead to teen pregnancies and/or diseases.…
