The Importance Of Community Service In High School

Improved Essays
As defined by Webster Dictionary, community service is “a service that is performed for the benefit of the public or its institutions” and is synonyms with public service. An increasing number of high schools are requiring their students to fulfill a designated number of hours to the community in order to graduate. Many school districts believe that community service teaches students responsibility. High school students should be required to complete a designated number of community service hours, as community service participation can be used as leverage on a college application, allow students to build their network to learn more about scholarship opportunities, and assist students with developing their leadership skills.

Community service is not as bad as some people make it out to be. I myself had an internal groan when I heard that community service was required and would be set as a grade. I had only known volunteerism as doing a dull boring task with no discernible reward. But after experiencing it for myself I found it quite the contrary. Volunteering is a way to meet new people and witness a group working toward a greater cause.…

In Serve or Fail, the author, Dave Eggers, brings up the point that community service should be required in colleges. According to Eggers, “college is too long-it should be three years-and even with a full course load and part-time jobs there are many hours in the days and weeks that need killing.” He believes that with all of the free time that students have, they should do something productive and helpful like community service. Additionally, Eggers thinks that if colleges were to require community service, then it would not only improve their working environment, but it would also touch and improve each student. I would agree with Eggers because I have found out that when colleges require community service, it increase their students’ self-efficiency, boost their teamworking skills, and helps them find a sense of responsibility.…

This weekend, November 20th-22nd I worked a poverty simulation through Mission Waco. I first went through the poverty simulation during my first semester at Baylor with my Poverty in Developing Countries class taught by Janet Dorrell. I have been learning about the causes and effects of poverty for about a year now, but for the first time I was able to look at poverty through a different perspective as I looked for ways in which it affects education. The first portion of the poverty simulation begins on Friday night; everyone is allowed to keep four of their items and is given forty-one dollars of fake money for the weekend expenses, which include, food, clothing, and potentially shelter inside. On Saturday morning, those who paid for breakfast get to eat from an assortment of chips and some coffee.…

Many of the organizations that I am involved in, including FFA, 4-H, and LYO, take part in several service projects throughout the year. As a result, I have been involved in multiple community service activities over the course of my high school career, such as taking a week-long mission trip to Nashville, Tennessee this past summer, or just spending an evening during the holiday season Christmas caroling around town. Although some people aren't always willing to give up their time to help others, I believe that an essential aspect of being a member of a community is being willing and able to devote your time to helping others. It helps you develop positive relationships, and it lets the people you're helping know that there are places they can turn to for support. It helps you build up your responsibility, reliability, and work ethic, and it provides community members with a chance to establish lasting connections with one another.…
