The Holidays are a time for giving and with Christmas just around the corner it’s easy to forget the people who are not in your immediate life. You forget the people who won’t have any presents or even enough food this holiday season due to their low income. The income for one person requirements includes an annual making of $21,775, $1,815 monthly, and $419 weekly. A family of four would meet the poverty income by making $44,863 annually, $3,739 monthly, and $863 weekly. Each of the amounts based on the federal poverty guidelines 2015-2016. Once they qualify, families can get help up to 4 times in a 12 month period, but senior citizens (65+) and the disabled may qualify for monthly assistance. Remember its not just the kids that are going without items they need. We donated two magnifying glasses for those seniors who have difficulty reading, but other donations such as canes and walkers are always needed. This upcoming Saturday Community Link will host a christmas event for all the families it serves. Christmas dinner boxes that contain ham or turkey will be handed out to needy families. New unwrapped toys will be available for parents to select for their children. There will also be christmas carolers, coffee hot cocoa, snacks, and even Mr. and Mrs. Clause. My family is planing to donate more food before the event this weekend and to do this every year especially during the holiday …show more content…
When volunteering you have to fill out a release form if your between the age 13 through 17 and have to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. When you walk in to the building you can sense that everyone is their for the same reason to help the community, to end hunger, and better those who are in need. With the new facility it gives you a welcoming feel and could see the different activities that happenen their like how they stored and served the food. My experience with Community Link has been eye opening, not yet having the chance to personally volunteer and help at the facility, walking in and seeing what goes on and reading the others who have volunteered comments like Marcie who said“ Thank you for all you do! It has really helped our family out.” “I was beyond blessed by your loving volunteers and staff. You helped our family in such a great time of need not just with providing food for us, but also by your supportive uplifting staff and a genuine attitude of caring and support. Thank you for being a blessing to not just my family but or whole community. You have not just given us provision today, but put hope in

I wasn’t sure what I expected when going to my community service for the first time. The place that I choose, the Lincoln Park Community Shelter, resided nearby the Lincoln Park, DePaul campus, so I just thought it would be an easy travel to and from the train station. Walking to the site, it was something that I’m not easily used to at home. Around there, there were clean and beautiful scenery all around. Every block I would walk pass a jogger or a person walking their dog in the peaceful environment.…

For the most part growing up in a middle class family and in a fairly small town like Saginaw makes it easy to think that everyone else is just as financially stable as your family. This can lead to the mind set that really low income families live in a different city, state, or even a different country. Sometime it takes the holidays to realize that families who have trouble to provide necessities for living live right in your community, and can't financially afford to provide a dream Christmas for their children which provides hope through their struggles. The importance of understanding this and then applying action is highly encouraged through programs such as The Salvation Army's angel tree of which I've taken a part of, and applied to…
