Community colleges in California help students transfer to universities, enter the labor force, and/or promote within their current field of occupation. One of the greatest threats community colleges in the state encounter is losing their accreditation from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC). The ACCJC is one of several accrediting agencies in the US that strives to hold community colleges accountable by periodically assessing and accrediting them. After working for the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), I understand how community college leaders must resolve sanctions and warnings issued by the ACCJC as soon as possible.

The purpose of issuing sanctions and warnings is to document problems or obstacles and propose how rectifying these issues can improve the quality of education. The ACCJC releases the following types of reports over the course of its evaluation of schools: 1) Midterm report. The report is prepared three years after an external evaluation. 2) Follow-up report. This report is required when an institution needs to address a recommendation. It can also be used to resolve deficiencies identified during the external evaluation. 3) Special report. When the commission discovers a significant concern about the institution, it issues a special report. 4) Show cause report. This report is handed out to colleges when the commission is removing the accreditation from the institution. In addition, school leaders must use transformational leadership in order to correct problems with the campus and provide feedback to the accrediting agency. According to Grogan (2013) one of the main benefits with using transformational leadership is the ability to “step outside the situation, make sense of it, and reframe the problem.
