Pinker, a psychologist who wrote How the Mind Works, a study on the human brain, believes that human nature is made up of many different layers that reveal themselves at certain times and situations. On the other hand, William Golding, author of Lord of the Flies, believes that the core of human nature is evil and is subdued by societal restraints. However, my opinion on the subject sides with Pinker. Human nature is special and complex because of its ability to be compassionate, virtuous, and benevolent, but also greedy, violent, and malevolent. Environment is key to triggering these emotions and activities. A human’s family, community, and physical surroundings are key environmental factors that play a role in how they behave. Due to these three things, human nature is both good and evil.

Although, just because malevolence can come from a bad environment, it does not mean that it is the simple essence of human nature. Agreeing along the lines with what Steven Pinker believes, human nature is complex and is both good and bad. The environment affects which characteristics are shown and which are kept hidden inside us. Our parents, our community, and our physical surroundings are all key aspects as to how human nature behaves. Golding’s belief is really all up to interpretation and is very situational.
