Parent-Teacher Conferences

I believe that it is important for teachers to communicate with all parents, regardless of their socioeconomic statues. Teachers should always start the communications by mentioning positive things about the student. If the teachers focus on the negatives, the parents will feel that their children are failures. At the same time, teachers should communicate in a way that the parents do not feel as inferior beings. As mentioned in the reading, all parents hold big expectations for the role that schools will play in the life chances of their children. One action that I have put in place when communicating to these groups is to go directly to the communities. I am aware that in many occasions, the parents cannot attend the parent-teacher …show more content…
I consider that the presentation of the strengths the students are displaying in class as the main component of the parent-teacher conferences. Yes, there should be a mention of any issues that the students may have, but that mention should not take the majority of the time. I think that parent-teacher conferences should present positives, challenges, and more positives, so the parents feel that the result of such meeting was a positive one. On the other hand, the problem have seen as an interpreter working in diverse schools during the parent teacher conferences is that many teachers will spent the whole conference time focusing on the issues the students may have, and will mention barely, if any, the students’ …show more content…
By visiting the communities, the teachers will have a sense of the realities that shape the students’ lives. At the same time, the teachers will have done the first step in promoting communication between them and the parents. Once the parents perceive that the teachers care for them and their children, the parents may feel better about visiting the schools and being part of the communication. In my community asset map, I mentioned places in the community where such initial communication could take place, since they are in the middle of the community and are in favor of creating such connections between schools and community

Parental involvement in schools is not always an easy task yet, it is very beneficial for everyone involved in a child’s educational development. Students must see that parents have an invested interest in what transpires at school. When parents are involved at schools they become more aware of how to best help their child at home. In addition, “students are more inherently interested in learning, and they experience higher perceived competence” (Gonzalez,-DeHass, Willems and Holbein, 2005, p. 117). Parents and teachers must create a positive partnership or teamwork to show the student the importance of learning in and outside of school.…

Districts, schools, and teachers should encourage family support and involvement to better meet a student’s needs. Even if it means helping them get to IEP meetings by picking them up, scheduling meetings around the family’s schedule, electing someone at the school to watch younger children during the meetings, or opting for conference calls when they cannot be there. Parents and guardians are a vital part of how schools work with students and should be treated as…

When building strong school-family partnerships, I see the following steps as essential: 1.Inform and educate all stakeholders about the benefits that strong school-family partnerships have on student achievement. Before effective partnerships can be developed, it is important that families and schools truly understand the necessity of school-family engagement, and the effects it has on student success. When it comes to teachers, the research discussed by Ferlazzo (2011) has shown there is often a prevailing negative attitude in schools regarding working with parents that “do not lead to the kind of school-family connections that raise student achievement” (p. 10). School personnel must be trained regarding the importance of these partnerships,…

In the process of teacher education I feel that the classes should consist of more hand on activities such as doing lesson plans and presenting them. If the student was to present the lesson to a group of students it will be better since they will obtain many techniques such as presenting and also modify if there is any concerns the students give them. In a classroom setting teachers should do more activities to get the students involved. In my own schooling experience I do not recall doing a lot of activities in my classroom, due to it I would occasionally find myself being bored. If we have teachers who do fun engaging lesson plans I think will also help improve the test scores.…

Communicating with administration is important because that is where your line of updates comes from as well as good advice on how to handle certain situations. They will be able to inform you on many topics and be able to give good advice. Communicating with students is very important and is one of the major reasons why I think it is a big principle. Parents and teachers communication is important, as it can strengthen children’s ability and improve their behaviours (Zhang, Biggs & Watkins, 2010). Parents should understand children’s learning process and achievement, so parents may encourage teachers to address on specific observation or concern. Since most of the teachers are lack of professional training and under heavy workload, teachers might not give adequate attention and guidance to all students. As a result, teachers often encourage parental participation in student learning, particularly the students with SEN. Due to student diversity, teachers put more efforts on designing lesson plans and materials, and providing resources to support and enrich students learning. Good communication between parents and teachers helps to understand children’s progress or barriers, so parents could be clearer about how to assist their children at home.…

Responses from middle school and high school parents to interview questions often mirrored one another. A notable difference prevailed when parents were asked about the teachers’ responsibility for educating children. Responses from middle school parents differed in that they felt middle school students were very impressionable and that it was important for teachers to provide positive affirmations to the students. AB, middle school parent, stated, “I think middle school teachers need to provide more encouragement and positive dialogue. They are an influencer in my child’s life, and it is important for them to be a positive role model.” Additionally, SG stated, “Middle school teachers should not discourage students but provide encouragement and honest feedback regarding students’ work and abilities.” Teacher and administrator responses complemented each other in that they found it important for teachers to develop and sustain positive relationships with students and parents while preparing students for life after school and the real…
