Personal Reflection: My Transition From Community College To University

To the job site I brought in proficient computer skills including technical and software aspects. During my time at a Community College, I learned and advanced capabilities in Microsoft Office programs including Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access (database software). I believe this was an advantage when making the transition from Community College to University because I would be able to use advanced features in these programs to help me excel in projects and assignments. On the job site, I was able to further put into practice my computer skills, however, it was not to the extent of my full capabilities. It took a while before the staff in the department were able to notice my abilities with word processing software, …show more content…
Being a medical field there are private matters that often come up in different areas. During the COM 361 (Communication Ethics) course I was able to put definitions into morals, values, and ethical perspectives that I already follow through on a personal level. Although I did learn a lot of background information about the inner workings of the department, I never felt disturbed by the type of information I learned. I have not felt an ethical duty to disclose any information I have learned; any information that should be disclosed can be done so in an effortless …show more content…
One of the major obstacles that I faced at the Wellness Center was not being a Food & Nutrition, Kinesiology, or Health Promotion major – the top majors sought after by the administrative team at the center. Many priorities were given to students in these majors. These other students were often assigned to prepare their own programs or lectures. I believe I could have made just the same contributions to any projects I could have been given. Most of the programs and lectures were predesigned, so I could have easily taken some of my knowledge and manipulated these program to appeal to my audience. Besides showing my knowledge in health related topics, I believe I would have exercised my presentation and public speaking skills. As previously mentioned, not even my computer technical or software skills were being used to aid during these presentations. Nevertheless, I was able to find other opportunities to apply my

“I know applying to colleges is the last thing you want to do right now, but you might change your mind,” a trusted friend told me. It was December of my senior year of high school, and college application deadlines were approaching quickly. I was recovering from a major illness at the time, and wasn’t ready to think about college. My plan was to spend a year living at home and working before I pursued higher education. In the following months, my recovery progressed rapidly.…

My past laid out upon a table. My GPA, my resume, my test scores. An unfamiliar man whom I met for the first time was frowning, turning around in his creaky red chair, while hurriedly trying to contextualize my life with just a few pieces of paper. For 15 minutes, he sat there, unhappy, tapping his foot, analyzing what I’ve “done” with my life. He took a sip of water and suggested that I go to community college.…

My decision to attend HACC was due to financial needs. Originally, my educational plan was to attend Penn State Harrisburg as a double major in Political Science and Psychology, to which I have already been accepted. However, the opportunity to attend a community college with a very strong relationship with my main institution was one I could not pass, especially given the lower cost of attendance and high transferability of credits. My goal is to transfer or graduate from HACC without having accumulated debt so that my time at Penn State Harrisburg will go smoothly and be most worthwhile. I feel fervent that I have made the best decision for my current life situation.…

All my life, I’ve been aware of the people around me and considered what I could do to make their lives more fortunate. With this interest in mind, I joined the Anti-Bulling Club (ABC) at my school in the 6th grade, eventually becoming ABC president in the 10th grade. As president, my biggest priority was to make my school a place where students were welcomed to engage in discussion unafraid of what might be said; I tried accomplishing this goal by getting volunteers to hold the doors and greet peers to school each morning. Through creating this inviting atmosphere, students participated in more constructive conversation, leading to provoking questions that even teachers could not answer. When I transitioned to community college life in the…

As a running start student I could talk about how my experience at community college helped prepare me to transfer to a four year university, but the lessons I learned there were primarily limited to academics. Sure, I learned how to be successful in a college class room, that online classes don’t fit my learning style, and going to Hong Kong for two weeks in the middle of the quarter will significantly lower a GPA. (I eventually retook the classes from that quarter.)…

At the Early College I did not have the opportunity to take part in a JROTC program because it was not offered, however, I did make an attempt to take the opportunities for growth available to me. My experience leading groups in Student Government Association drove me to become more organized and productive. As yearbook editor, I have to make sure spreads, captions and copies are completed and proofread by the deadline. In addition, it is up to me to plan meetings with the yearbook staff and coordinate meetings with representatives from Herff Jones, the yearbook publishing company. Taking on the position of yearbook editor has taught me to take initiative in making sure that tasks are successfully completed.…

Unlike them, my family could not afford for me so I started to find a job and pay the tuition by myself with little help from financial aid. My life changed a lot since I went to college.…

A couple of months ago I transferred to Mercyhurst University. Not because I was unhappy at FSU Panamanian Campus, but because something drove me to do so. A year and a half after transferring colleges, I can assure you, that I have no idea whatsoever of what that "something" was. Several months later, I still ask myself if I made the right choice. How to know if transferring colleges was a right decision, or is a good decision to consider in the future, is something that can either remain unanswered, or not.…
