The Importance Of Communication In 'The Most Important Rule'

Imagine being 10 miles into a hiking trail, alone, and you didn’t bring your phone. You trip on a rock and break your leg, immobilizing you completely. At this moment, you realize the importance of communicating your location and estimated return time from your endeavour. If you don’t communicate these vital pieces of information to others before your trip, you may end up facing the consequences. If a hiker tells a friend when they are expected to return, the friend knows when to start looking for them. Even if the hiker says where they are going, but not when they are coming back, then that someone doesn’t know if they go missing or not. For example, in the text “The Most Important Rule, by Jared Myers, a man by the name of “Amos Wayne Richards,””...made an attempt to traverse Utah’s Blue John Canyon”(Myers 117). But because Richards never told anyone when he was to return, “Four days later, rangers set off to rescue him.”(Myers 117). The Utah rangers started the search after four days, because RIchards never specified when he was returning. The rangers also had to guess where Richards was located, and got lucky when they found him. This instance shows that not only is return time important to communicate, but so is the location that you are …show more content…
Specifying your location gives rescuers a better idea of where to look for you in case of an emergency situation. On page 117 of “The Most Important Rule,” by Jared Myers, it states, “From clues...rangers figured out where [Richards] was likely located…”(Myers 117).Because Richards only said he was hiking in Blue John canyon, rather than saying an exact trail or road he was taking, the park rangers had to search the entire park for Richards, which could have resulted in his death. Now if worst comes to worst, and no one knows where you are, or when you are expected to return, you may have to rescue
