Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a pyramid that illustrates the order that people categorize their needs in life. The lowest need, also the most necessary, is the need for food, shelter, water, etc. The second need is safety, the third need is love, the fourth need is acquiring self-esteem, and lastly, the fifth is self-actualization. Will begins by working a job he clearly has no interest in for the sole purpose of survival and uses this to ensure his security in shelter. Will has several friends and eventually meets Skylar, these people help accomplish the third section of the pyramid. The importance of communication is even more important when approaching the fourth and fifth sections. Throughout the entire movie, Will doesn’t show his reached self-esteem or self-actualization until he starts truly communicating with Sean.
