Alexander Central High School Case Study

As a current school counselor at Alexander Central High School, a significant problem I encounter on a daily basis is the lack of students understanding the importance of higher education. The Alexander County community at-large, consistently devalues higher education through their attitudes and actions. According to the US Census Quick Facts (2008-2011), “Only eleven percent of Alexander County citizens have a bachelor’s degree or higher education, while twenty-seven percent of North Carolina residents hold a bachelor’s degree or higher” (p.3). It is imperative that parents and guardians understand how vital their role is in supporting their child 's future in higher education. A collaboration between the school and parents is necessary to emphasize the importance of continuing education after high school. In order to derail the massive misconception of higher education at Alexander Central High, I am advocating for implementing a College-Going Culture.

Shifting our school’s focus to a collegegoing culture requires changing attitudes and actions at all levels: student, school staff, parental, and community. Maintaining a consistent focus on the variety of available options for Alexander Central graduates, offering and publicizing college information nights to the general community, and cheering on our students’ success will go a long way toward our goal of establishing a college-going culture. Students deserve options for their future, regardless of their race, economic status, or academic achievement. It is our goal to advocate for a college-going culture by providing our students with these opportunities through our motivation and dedication to making Alexander Central High School a place where college is the next step for everyone (College Board,

In this article, Owen and Sawhill tell of how going to college does not guarantee success and they give examples of the positives and negatives of the choices they may make. Owen and Sawhill use ethos, logos, and pathos to explain how college may not be the best choice for all students.…

If this was a quality school, they would not give up on their students, instead give advice as to what other options a student may have to choose from. In contrast, Addison believes college, especially community college, upholds importance. She states, “They offer a network of affordable future, of accessible hope, and an option to dream” (Addison, 214). There is no doubt, that to be a successful entity in today’s age, you must be educated. We spend our early years dragging our feet through high school, only to be pushed out to the other side where the question of college appears. For those who choose this path, whether it was immediately after college or a few years down the road, they find themselves adapting and changing who they are for their education. Students from all backgrounds including those who have families to support, and students who do not have support from their parents, walk into the dark abyss of education not knowing what they will receive on the other side. How we reflect upon and process ideas and situations, is put to the test and we see two distinct mindsets emerge from fellow students.…

In their articles, “Two Years Are Better Than Four” and “Are Too Many People Going to College?” Liz Addison and Charles Murray discuss how colleges now are much different than colleges in the past. The college experience has changed since people, such as Rick Perlstein, went to college. Even though the college experience is ever evolving, it can still be a very important part of someone’s life. Even if it is not at a “four-year brick-and-mortar residential college” (Murray 229) like many parents and high school faculty push students to go to right away.…

There is not a motivation to encourage them to take highly demanding courses, and since they are new in the system, they are unable to complain for something different. In addition, even if they complain, they are excluded from the option of taking a harder class because of the English level they can handle. The argument is unfair for those who excel in mathematical and scientific ability but lack of English proficiency.…

“The Assault on Colleges - and the American Dream” Ideally, college sets students up for success in the real world: teaching the necessary skills and connecting them with people from heterogeneous backgrounds and experiences. However, state cuts in funding for higher education has caused many colleges to replace lower income students with those who can pay full tuition. Without lower income students, campuses will lack diverse ideas and experiences, increasingly becoming a homogeneous mixture of students, rather than a heterogeneous one. While some students have the advantage of affluence, many students rely on public colleges and their financial assistance to garner a more affordable education.…

Many have asked, is there really a difference between community college and a four year university. The answer is, yes, of course because of the smaller classes, academics, and advantages one might receive from a community college experience. Four year colleges, on the other hand, have bigger classes, higher academic standards, and a completely different atmosphere. Community colleges offer more one on one help, because of the class sizes.…

Many concerned parents think about their child or children’s education, but not all parents have the resources to send their child or children on to higher education. The only hard decision a child should have to make concerning college is choosing which school is best for them after high school. If a person wants to go on to college after high school, it should not have to be a difficult decision based on a nonexistence of monetary contributions. Unfortunately for most children in American families the lack of awareness of preparing for the future of the child or children in the home for continued education has caused many children to become stifled in the pursuit of a college degree. I being a college student myself understand the challenges that a student can face working towards a degree; especially if the student is a first generation college student.…

Many students upon completing high school enroll and start in a community college, but many do not finish. This is a problem that needs to be addressed. In high school the students have their hands held and upon finishing are left with little or no direction when starting college. Many are still immature and without additional support and guidance they get lost in the system of education.…

It’s been said that college is a time for one to explore the world around them, and grow as an individual. More often than not the beliefs, opinions, values, interest, and many other aspects of an individual’s life evolve after attending a college or university. I know this personally, because I have now nearly completed my first semester of my freshman year in college. My outlook on the world from the time I graduated high school, in May, has dramatically changed throughout the course of several months. An essential component of my transformation has been the “Self and Community” class I am taking at Olivet College.…
