I am more than a number, yet I represent many. My mother was 36 years of age at my birth and her only other child was eighteen years my senior. I wasn’t supposed to be born, yet I am here. The statistics say that a gay, African-American male should be scholastically unable to excel at the highest academic levels, but I am a scholar. I was educated in Detroit Public Schools, which has a reputation as one of the most economical disadvantaged and academically inferior school districts in the nation. According to the statistics, a poor, Black, gay man from a single parent household in Detroit is not supposed to become the valedictorian of his junior college or maintain a 3.925 gpa at UC Davis, but my education is all that I ever had that truly …show more content…
I have been accepted into the London School of Economics for the fall quarter and I will also be applying to the Marshall and Gates Cambridge Scholarships so that I can receive my doctorate degree in political science from Cambridge. I want to know as much about the system as I can so that I can become an instrument of change. I want little Black boys and girls in Detroit to have access to a high quality education. I want young gay men and women to know something that I did not: attempting suicide is not the answer. I learned that God loves me for who I am not in spite of it. The problem is with our society, not our children. My future lies in politics so I can secure the futures of people who look like me and love like me. The knowledge of academia that I receive from UC Davis guides my political path, and the wisdom of my grandmother guides my soul. My journey has led me from Detroit to Davis and soon to London. I have been transformed by my education and the lives of those that society has left behind. The words, “Be ye transformed by the renewing of your minds” has been my statement of truth, but so many never have this chance.
