In this article, Bornstein states that culture is what defines what the child will encounter later in life and certain ideals that will be presented. This article proves that a child’s culture is what introduces that child to certain experiences. My parents culture affected their view and understanding of preschool, especially, since none of my siblings attended preschool. It was my parent’s decision not to enroll us in preschool because they didn’t really see the importance of it. My parents believed that preschool was unnecessary since we would learn everything that we needed to once we entered kindergarten. Piaget states that development is universal but if that were true it would require parents to have the same culture and ideals pertaining to education. Therefore, Piaget Stage Theory is incorrect and my incident proves it. If cognitive development was universal, I along with the other children in the course would not be completing extra courses to be at the expected level. In Bornstein article, he states that a culture contains particular characteristics that are viewed to be an essential component for their members. Since, my parents didn’t finish schooling they did not find it necessary for my siblings and I to attend pre-school because they were not accustomed to this idea. My parents were accustomed to the required grade levels that they attended for some short time while growing
