Clinical Nurse Leader: A Case Study

As a horizontal leader, the Clinical Nurse Leader is pivotal to the healthcare team, serving as a critical navigator through the microsystem (Harris, et. al., 2014). In preparing the CNL for the prestigious role, such skills as effective communication, collaboration, negotiation, delegation, coordination and evaluation must be learned and mastered for the CNL to be successful in demonstrating the strength of this new type of nurse. It is through these advanced characteristics that will aid the CNL in effectively lead interdisciplinary teams successfully.

al., 2014). As a CNL the focus should be on enabling more people to develop into leaders, more people to work on improving the process of leading and more people to share the roles of leading (Nelson, et. al., 2007).
I would create a strategic and dedicated interdisciplinary team. I would surround myself with team members that demonstrate not only keen critical thinking skills in the specialty that I am a member of but also embrace the vision of teamwork and working together as a united front. Having a dedicated team means more than gathering qualified clinicians but also requires a focus on continuous education and a staff that is willing to work as a unit (Hilton, 2016).
Other dynamic requirements that I would focus on would be ongoing team training and team building. These are equally essential for all members to actively participate in. Everyone would attend quarterly update meetings throughout the year. This gives dayshift and nightshift staff a chance to express their encounters and ideas. Data collection would be discussed as to how the unit as a whole is doing and where there are opportunities for growth and learning. It gives the team a chance to interact with all members of the interdisciplinary team and propel the team forward. The change process is not an easy journey but it can provide a path to reflective practice. Nurses can be creatures of habit. They use phrases such as “we’ve always done it this way and it’s easier just doing it this way”. This type of mindset can weaken and cripple evidence based practice. Change is a process. Change is vital in order to be a successful leader. Grossman and Valiga (2012) stated if we desire change, we must be willing to face chaos and the unknown.
