Leadership in nursing for graduate nurses becomes incredibly important to ensure support for graduate staff to help increase confidence and contribute to a graduate nurse’s development of leadership skills (Hancock, 2014). These leadership skills are necessary for preparations for future nursing leaders as these skills are necessary to progress forward as a nurse as they ensure patient safety with quality and innovative care (Scott & Yoder-Wise, 2013). Furthermore, leadership, like nursing, is a skill that is increased through education and experience (Scott & Yoder-Wise, 2013) so increasing a graduate nurse’s skill improves their ability to identify problems and evaluate outcomes (Chappell et al., 2014). Finally, a positive relationship between manager and staff as well as grad nurses is important as this relationship can have a major significant impact on patient goals and outcomes (Viinikainen et al., 2015) thus why leadership styles are so important. Clearly certain styles of leadership are significantly more effective, however it is clear that it is not logical to stick to one style of leadership as each scenario is different and each situation requires a different style of leadership to ensure it is adequately dealt with. Furthermore, different leadership styles ensure that a situation with a patient is dealt with in a manner that provides the most adequate and safe care increasing patient satisfaction. Finally, every level of nursing requires leadership, from the graduate nurse to the nursing manager, they all require leadership skills.
